Hi Guys!
I'm joining ranks of GTP owners smile

I just bought my 1997 Red GTP with all options..
It has 90000 miles, and it needs some cleaning and fluid changes but still a nice CAR!
I love it! smile

I was driving home (90 miles) when I noticed a few things I wanted to ask you about -

1. It seems that it used almost half a tank to drive these 90 miles, was going mostly highway (60-70 mph) the guage showed a little less then 1/2 tank back then, now it is in Low Fuel range???
When I got home I noticed that Perfrormance Shift button was pushed in - could that affect milage this much? Don't know what gas it had maybe 87 frown
On the highway it was under 2K RPM..

2. The Coolant guage shows just under 150 degrees F half way beetween 100F and 210F??? It was 23 F outside, but still seems low?

3. What should I expect my 90K 1997 GTP run in 1/4 mile and 0-60 stock?

Thank you guys, and it is very nice to meet you all!

Hey, whats up?
Glad to have ya aboard. I'm fairly new to this car too, but
1)That doesn't seem too bad. However, performance shift makes a bigger difference than you might think.
2)Not sure.
3)low 15/high 14?

Again, welcome. thumbsup

Welcome aboard!

1) Change your fuel filter and get some injector cleaner and use it next time you fill up. Run that tank down and see how it does on the next tank. Always use high octane in your GTP.
Shift perf will cause your gas mileage to go down just a tich. Also, you might want to think about changing the plugs and wires with that much mileage.
2) It looks like you might have a 160* t-stat (maybe?).
3) Yeah, low 15/high 14

PICS!!!

cheers

Hello,

With 90K on the clock, you may need plugs, wires, and possibly coil packs, pending on what the connections look like....This will affect performance and mileage....

1. This description is too vague to give any insight...put some premium in, and get some actual numbers before questioning the MPG. Driving habits, and terrain affect mileage as well.

2. My gauge starts at 160*...1/2 way between that and 210 is about where you should be.

3. Stock GTP's run anywhere from mid 14's to low 15's in the 1/4. Pending on where you are, and the conditions......0-60 is somewhere around 6 seconds, I think....Not sure on that one.

Have fun with your new car!

Later now,
Clint

Thank you guys!
1) First I was thinking my gas tank/lines leak, because fuel was going like that..
One other thing is when I got it to my garage there was some fuel smell, not like from a leak, but like from exhaust, like the car runs to rich or something.. I'm going to put full tank of Sanoco 94 smile
Full tune-up is in order but money kinda left me today smile

2) Looks like 160 T-stat but the car looks stock.. very strange, maybe because of the cold..
Anyway, it is probably not harmful?

3) Wow that's great smile Auto running low high 14/low 15s smile

4) My DIC screen is not working, seller told me there is a lamp that needs to be changed..?
I know some buttons work because I can switch my HUD between ENG/MET.

Here are some pics, needs a good bath smile -

There are lights behind your DIC. One of mine went out last week.
I was lucky enough to catch a post that had this web site that gives complete instructions on how to change the lights:

Welcome, yea your perf shift definately ate up your gas, its meant for um, well its not meant for daily driving laugh You may just be running cold because its cold out. If you do have a 160tstat its not really anything to worry about, you might want to consider checking out GPStore and seeing if you want the 180tstat instead its like 10bucks 5min install + bleeding.

Yea our cars are pretty fast as youll see, INTENSE has a turbo GT running low 10's right now just for one example. Its also fun to know you can make anyone talking ill of the GP's eat their words (and youll get alot) as most people assume just because its a heavy car its slow.

If it had 87 in it make sure it doesent taste that stuff again, ALWAYS premium+ on GTP's, now you have an idea of the gas youll burn if your hammer ing down the highway.

Once you tune it up and get it all clean I think youll be more than happy with it.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Thank you all, guys!
Yeah, I think I'm more than happy with my GTP smile All this fuel talk - it doesn't mater to me even if it gets 6 MPG smile

The cooling thing - I don't think the car has 160 F t-stat (it stays below 160 F and it's stock) but I think the t-stat is sticking open all the time.. have to test it..

Went to Pontiac dealership ordered 3 bulbs ($4 ea) for DIC hope it works smile

BTW, my stock radio is gone, some aftermarket one is in it's place frown

So what should I change:
0. 91+ GAS smile
1. Engine Oil + Filter
2. ATX Oil + Filter
3. Air Filter
4. Fuel Filter
5. Spark plugs
6. Wires ?
7. Coils ?
8. Coolant?
Anything else?

mhack, let me put in my input on the tune up matter. when you change your plug wires go to the pontiac dealer and get your plug wires. I tuned my GTP up and had a miss until I went to GM dealer and got wires. cost more but you will be better off in the long run. take care of your 97 GTP and it will last for a long time

#1. Top of tank or bottom? Top always takes longer to burn then bottom end. Should be getting right around 24 to 25 MPG
Turn Perfrormance shift off on highway, no need for it.
#2, Maybe the guy that had it before you put a 160 stat in it.
#3, low 15's high 14's

And if we are listing pictures of our cars, here's mine;

You mean pontiac wires are better than aftermarket?
