This is my problem: 97 gtp.
lol, get it?
I have yet to go get it scanned so I have no codes. (i know, i know). Sometimes when I turn on the car the ABS light comes on and my check tire pressure (tire pressure is fine, I have checked) will come on as well, im thinking because of the ABS. After a few days it will go away and stay off for about a week. Then it will come on again. However, the weird part is that when the ABS light is OFF, the power steering is fine. When the ABS light is ON, it seems as though I have no power steering.
Any ideas?

Use the search. ;-)
Probably a wheel hub. Power steering/ABS/Trac Control are all interrelated. Who knows why the power steering is affected... It's a "feature".

searched ABS+power, ABS+power steering and could not find anything.
I know the wheel hub sensors affect ABS and trac control. I have a 97 so it doesn't have trac control really. The tire pressure is monitored by variances in wheel speed. I can see the ABS light setting off the tire pressure light because of a shared sensor or something.
Are you saying that power steering would be affected by bad wheel hub sensors? Maybe a bad bearing in the hub would affect my steering but that would be noticeable whether the ABS light was on or not.
I'm more confused as to how/why the power steering is affected when the ABS light is on.

According to this article, Understanding & Servicing Magnasteer they should be two separate systems...maybe yours is using the '98 setup... ![wink wink](/forum/images/graemlins/default/wink.gif)

Not sure what the relationship is, but my 97 SE has a failing sensor/bad connection that occasionally sets off ABS/trac control. The steering is noticabley affected when it flips.

According to my owners manual, the power steering changes its responsiveness and feedback characteristics based on speed.

well power steering is pretty much useless when you are going past like 5 mph. you won't notice it. im talking about a dead stop. if the light is on, no power steering. light is off, power steering is normal.
I will have it scanned but I bet it is the sensor as that was my first guess. I just don't see how it virtually 'shut off' the power steering...

Bad design I guess. System must default to a speed that doesn't require much power assist if its connection to the speed sensor fails, at least for some '97s.
