Our GTP has 104K miles and went through the shop twice a couple years ago(dlr out of bus) to fix the SB on the engine oil leak that could result in a fire. It still has the pesky minor leak and you can smell hot oil on shut down.

What's the correct fix for this? I've never done engine work on it before but am ready to tear into it myself if I can't find a shop that can fix it.

I don't do much car work anymore except brakes, etc, but work on my own aircraft so I have the skills, but not the direction on these fine cars.

does the oil smell like burnt plastic or just regular oil. burnt plastic from what ive herd is synthetic oil if u carry it. the gaskets on the oil pan tend to seap oil. no fix unless u realy want to go through all the trouble of tearing the engine compartment out. the gaskit if replaced will seap like b4 again evetually.(acouple ppl i kno have done it and end up in square one after a while)

It smells like regular oil which is what I use.

Surely someone has researched this and come up with a hi temp product from some other source.

I agree that I don't want to tear it down unless I know I have a good fix at hand that others have been successful with.

Well first of all you need to get under the hood, and maybe the car itself, and find where the leak is coming from. Once you figure that out, there's almost surely a walkthrough somewhere here on how to fix it

I'll nail it down this weekend and post what I find.

Thanks

If you've had the valve cover gaskets replaced on the recall my next guess would be the oil pan gasket. My car has had it replaced once and it's already leaking again. My car only has 87K miles on it so it wouldn't surprise me if yours was starting to leak.

The easiest way to see if it's leaking is to put a piece of cardboard underneath the car and look for spots. Part of the pan is covered by a splash guard though so it could be leaking into there, in which case you would have to get under the car and look at the oil pan itself.

Past that it could be possible the valve cover gaskets could be installed wrong. But like nyjets said you just gotta get under the hood and look around. Be sure to check your oil level to see if your car really is losing oil.

OK...It was actually the oil pan. Oil is leaking around the pan and blowing back on the exhaust pipe and that's what I smell when it gets into the garage.

How hard is it to change? I'm curious to see if I can do it from underneath and through the right wheel well. If so the job looks like it would take about 3-4 hrs with clean up and all.

I'm also posting on the blue Pontiac site. I'm new at this, but figure with the all the owners, a lot of people have done this work already.

Silver...

Although ive never done it, its my understanding that the oil pan can only be done by lifting the motor off its mounts. This obviously involves quite a bit more work. Someone else should really chime in and confirm this though...

Yep it's a pita. Easiest way is to drop the cradle that's under the motor.

How do you lift & support the engine to take it off?

Rent an engine hoist from an auto parts store or a Taylor Rental

Yeah....I figured that. What I'm asking is, what's the right way to lift it? Are there engine mount lugs or something on top to hoist from?

There are brackets on both sides of the engine.

I have changed pan gasket once with the engine in the car ,you need to undo front engine mounts top and bottom lift engine a few inches ( i used a hydrolic jack with a block of wood under the vibration damper) you need to remove the lower mount and the large U shaped bracket that holds the mount (this is a magor pain but can be unbollted with percistance) you then can unbolt the pan and remove it ,the thing is this llarge U bracket is bolted to the block with 3 bolts on each side and they are difficult to get at the only way is with an offset boxend 17mm if I remember correctly, the new improved GM gasket does'nt seem to leak .Good luck.Chico(pops)
