Yes, that sounds bizarre, but I'm talking about the edges of the exhaust tips. Mine have black carbon/soot on them on the lower half, and I was wondering if anyone already did this and knows what works best. I guess my best bet would be a petroleum distillates product, since it'll clean the inside of the engine. Maybe Goo Gone and a brillo pad?

I used an SOS pad with a citrus cleaner and lots of elbow grease. Worked quite well

Steel wool, most definitly. Before I had my new exhaust tips I used steel wool, whenever I washed my car, to clean the tips. Maybe "borrow" one from the kitchen? ![devilgrin devilgrin](/forum/images/graemlins/default/devilgrin.gif)

Just wanted to follow up, even though I did it a couple of weeks ago. Man, it looks great now. Got most of it off with the wool, as suggested, but there was still stubborn spots that I finally had to sandpaper. Makes the exhaust stick right out. Now it stands apart from all the other GP's on the road. Wonder if anyone out there says "why are HIS so shiny?". ![smile smile](/forum/images/graemlins/default/smile.gif) I since had to wipe soot off them again a couple of times. I did wool the insides too, but they were a LOT easier than the edges. I recommend everyone do this. It's as much of an improvement as tire dressing! Did a Mothers 3 Phase wax job last Friday (front of car and mirrors were sort of milky looking from this past winter), now she looks like brand new. Kungfoofighter, is that original paint on your car. Don't see many that color. Makes it unique.

Not worried about rust after using the sand paper?
