Do our engines have any kind of provisions for block heaters? It's getting awful cold up here *shiver*

Not that I recall. There are products you can buy. One is a mat that is held on by magnets to the oil pan the other is a probe that goes in through the dipstick.

If you want to go cheap you can always let the motor cool a little and throw an electric blanket over the motor wink

My years in Maine with temps in the negative category for the highs the car never had issues not using a block heater.

Yes, they were installed in place of one of the freeze out plugs, Final installed position between 8 O'clock and 10 O'clock is acceptable:

I used the freeze plug type in SBC for years with great success. Plug it in 1 hr before I leave and the water temp was almost 100 when I started the car.
I would put the extension cord over my drivers mirror so I did not forget and drive off with it plugged in.

Right now I have an old fashioned drop light with a 100 watt bulb that I close inside the hood of my teen's car when it gets down below 20. It hangs between the radiator & block touching nothing. It is on a timer so it comes on 2 hrs before they leave for school. They say the heater actually blows warm before they reach the parking lot 2.5 miles away.
