clicking sounds in front suspension!

clicking sounds in front suspension! - 06/17/07 12:35 AM

Occasionally when I turn sharp while going slow I will hear a single nutted clunk. I can't figure out what it is as I have change strut mounts and struts, wheel bearings, tie rod ends, ball joints. I hope its not the CV joints as its not a rhythmic clinking and when changing the struts I checked for play on them and they are ok. Could it be the stabilizer bar or a gremlin?

If it' a single clunk it's most likely a strut mount if it's a clinking sound it's cv joints.Chico.

Second on the Strut mounts! Or possibly the Inner tie rods, nut I would have to go with the strut mounts.
Is it a "click" or a "Boing"??

its more of a boingy clunk. The strut mounts are new ( 2 days old) and the tie rods are 6 month old.
could it be anything else other then all the stuff I have changed out in the past 2 months?

I would still go with strut mounts .. there is defective parts, or miss linement on instal.

should also menton best way to test if it is the strut bearing.. get someone to hold the spring while u turn the steering wheel lock to lock..they should feel it "Boing"

Thanks Nice-Try. I'll give the last suggestion a whirl.

I was able to narrow down the issue to hearing only a single clunk from the front right side when backing up. Only then does the sound come. Not going forward and turning.

Did you check the upper mounts on the struts?

I installed new fronts on saturday and thought I tightened the big nut enough. Went for a test ride and had a clicking sound. All that was needed was to tighten the nut. Problem solved. Now for the rears.

By the way I put KYB's GR2s in smile

yesterday right after work I came home and checked the caliper and the spring. it rotates nicely and the caliper is as tight as I the day I changed the wheel bearing. The axle is not as tight as when new (there is less then 1/16" axial movement). I'll check the top nut, but I did tighten it to the right spec and being overcautious I gave it each one an additional quarter turn.

Thank you Herc and Nice-Try!!! I finally found out that it is the control arm to frame bushings and not the CV. phew.
