Rack Replacement - 01/25/07 08:11 PM

Hey, my first post here. This is a great place.
My rack went out in my 2000 GT and I am looking to do the work myself. I have never replaced this part before. I have done the pump 2x and other things on the car as well as other cars.

was hoping some one here could give me some pointers or sites to check out with instructions on how to replace the rack n pinion. Or if I should pay the money and have it done.

thanks in advance for any and all advice.

I'm pretty sure the procedure is going to involve dropping the subframe. The main points will be disconnecting the r/p from the steering shaft, removing pressure and return lines, and undoing the tie rod ends.

so dropping the subframe a difficult to do? Like I said, I haven't done this part of the mechanic work before. and what exactly is the r/p. I got the pressure and return lines, as well as will be putting on new tie rod ends.

Just shortening rack and pinion.

The subframe is held on with 4 bolts if I'm not mistaken, and they must be replaced if removed (per GM recommendations). You'll also run into the difficulty of lining it up correctly if you undo all of them at the same time. Your best source would be a factory service manual.

Be sure to have your floor jack under the car. This way you can slowly lower the sub frame - you only need to lower it about 4".

Be sure to lock the steering column with the wheels pointed straight, before removing the steering rack. Failure to do so can result in damage to the steering column and SIR coil.
