WON'T START - 12/01/04 06:35 PM

It's not our 97 GPGT that I'm trying to fix It's my daughter's 2001 Malibu. I know this is not Grand Prix related but I can't seem to find out anything anywhere else and I've usually gotten some replies here that were pretty good. Her Malibu has a 3.1 engine. It won't fire. Just a few days before it quit I noticed that I had to hold the gas pedal down a little to get it to start. It comes on with about 60 psi on the fuel rail when you turn the key on. the only way I have been able to get it to run was by pouring some gas in the big flexible pipe that is between the air cleaner and the throttle body. Anyone got any suggestions?
Or know where I can get some help? Or a Schematic?

TexasGP:

Her husband told me that he replaced the fuel filter. Could he have put it on wrong? Where is it? Is it at the tank?

On my GP, it is behind the rocker. about even with the rear door. You can't put them on backwards, at least mine you can't. When did he replace it?

Is there a spark or will it just not start? Might have bad spark plugs or wires if theres no spark. If there is yea he might have botched the fuel filter, typically fuel filters are under the car but ive never worked on a malibu so couldnt tell ya. Did it give any service engine codes? How many miles are on it?

It started when I poured the gas in it and ran smoothly for a few seconds so it has spark and the timing chain is okay I'd think. It has about 70k. I don't have a scan tool to check the engine codes. Can you check them by shorting a connector like the older ones?

Hello,

With 60psi at the fuel rail, it sounds like the injectors aren't pulsing.
Dunno where to go from there, but, if you've got 60lbs at the rail, that would eliminate the probability of filter, pump, or pump resistor gone bad.

Is there a security feature that would disable fuel delivery????Anyone???

Later now,
Clint

If the key has a pk3 mark onit you mite have a problem in that department.

Does your model have a pass III security system?

IF it does you may need to re-program your key's chip. The OEM key would have pk3m (m) as in master key.

Good God Clint. You did it again!!!!! The only thing with the Security future from what I have seen is it will still start for a few seconds then quit. However because he was saying he had to hold the gas down to keep it running could be several things from a IAC, Something keeping injectors from pulsing not sure what would do this tho......

Time for a scan. See if there are any codes.
