Completely false.

As long as your motor is in good condition, you should have excellent success running a synthetic oil. However, if your seals are beginning to show their age (be it by abuse or lack of maintanance) you may have an issue with excessive consumption.

Along with any product, do your homework and find out exactly what you want to buy and why. There are a multitude of oils claiming to be 'synthetic', each with their own unique composition. You'll feel better about your purchase when you know the full facts about the oil.

From my experience, I would have to agree with your rumor about not changing to Synthetic. I changed to Castrol Syntec 10w30 and it seems to consume more oil than it should. I am in the process of changing back to Pennzoil 10w30 now...I have a 98 GTP

just my 2-cents

I wonder where this rumour got started that interchanging is evil and synthetic is only for cars that are new. I have a 98 and started running Mobil 1 in it around 20,000 mile mark. Purrs like a kitten and there is no problems at all. I highly recommend synthetic oil if you live is a colder climate!

Ya, I live in a cooler climate! Minnesota. I am a college student and I have my 97 GTP in a parking lot. It sits there all week without being run until the weekend, I have 5 weight in it now cause of the cold. I know alot about cars, but when it comes to the synthetic oil, I dont know anything. What are the main advantages of running this oil? I have 77,000 miles on my car. Runs great. All seals were just replaced 5,000 miles ago. DO you think I should start running the syn? thanks!

forog to say that i started the syntec @ 68000 miles...maybe that is the reason it uses oil a little...

Yeah, i swapped out my '98 GTP's with Mobil 1 around the 23k mark (last year). No leaks, and surprisingly no consumption.

Remember, though. Blowby is often the leading cause of oil consumption, so before going synthetic, it may behoove you to try a GENTLE engine flush. Not a harsh solvent, those can break off chunks and send them who-knows-where in your engine.
