2001 Grand Prix GT Problem - 12/04/08 11:14 PM

I have a 2001 Grand Prix GT with the 3.8 and auto. Today while sitting at a light the car idled normally, but when I have it gas it shut off. It took about 30 seconds before it would restart. There has been no issue since then. Othe issues with the car would be occasionally the tach will stop working and the traction light will come on and there is a weird smell occasionally with the heater on.

So your car is dieing when idleing or when throttling it a bit? To early to diagnose nething gonna need more info. Please explain a little more.

Ok tach dying sounds like a Crank Position Sensor (CPS) is going out. Your stalling issues maybe related because without input from the CPS the computer doesn't know what kind of timing to give. For the TCS light if the computer doesn't know rpms it can't modulate engine power to help regain traction.

Describe the weird smell. Coolant like, dead animal like?

And Welcome to the board.

I agree, sounds like CPS since your tach dies. I would start by replacing that, and see if it resolves your issue.
