buying struts and stuff

buying struts and stuff - 03/16/07 07:50 PM

with my tax return i need to replace my struts, coils, mounts and all that stuff. the prix has around 145,000 on the originals so i figure it's about time. fortunately it's mostly highway but i am noticing the "noises" a little more when going over the bumps. i digress. i would like a little advice/reassurance if necessary.

right now i have:
-four (4) kyb-gr2 gas struts

i need:

4 eibach coils (i figure if i'm going to do this i might as well do it semi-right)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Eibach-Pr...sspagenameZWDVW

4 mounts
-i assumed just some mounts from autozone would be good enough but i thought i read somebody had a problem with oem mounts and the strut popped through the hood. ouch. they suggested kyb mounts but i cant find a place that sells them.

4 anti-pogo washers(because of the eibach pro-kit is what i've gathered while reading and searching)
http://www.zzperformance.com/grand_prix/products1.php?id=403&catid=138
these are out of stock. who else sells them? i cant seem to find them anywhere else.

is there anything else i'm missing to do this right?

let the wisdom flow, gpnet.

If you're doing all that, might as well do a GMPP handling kit also.

whats the diff between the GMPP and the SLP? is the SLP really worth the extra money?

When the struts break the mounts it's not the OEMs that are at fault it's re-using mounts that have already accumulated a bag full of miles.

SLP handling kit? Not sure if SLP has one. I can't find one on their site.

The GMPP consist of thicker front and rear sway bars, tubular trailing arms, and a front STB.
Well worth the money.

thanks for the input.

i will probably get the handling kit this summer or when i get the cash. right now the struts and stuff is more important. especially living in the country.

Re: buying struts and stuff - 03/17/07 01:56 PM

yea thats the one i was trying to compare to the slp but AustinGTP was reffering to a different kit and i wasnt sure where to find that one at? so is there any difference besides the price of the GMPP and the SLP sway bars?

Re: buying struts and stuff - 03/17/07 03:07 PM

nope ... i dont think so ... i havent put on a sway bar yet but i am going to use the gmpp one when i do it ... there is no way i am going to pay that amount for the slp one ... i think you are paying for the name like you do with alot of things

Re: buying struts and stuff - 03/17/07 03:33 PM

GMpartsdirect.com has the complete kit. Look under the upgrades section.

thank you

Re: buying struts and stuff - 03/17/07 09:24 PM

what is the difference between the upgrade handling kit from gmpartsdirect:
http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/results.cfm?singlepart=1&partnumber=pk12456148

and the kit from zzperformance:
http://www.zzperformance.com/grand_prix/products1.php?id=571&catid=138

there is an extra bar in the first link that is not present in the zzp link. is that an unnecessary piece? that's quite a difference in price ~$80. i will assume that the one from gmpartsdirect will do more for handling than the one from zzp. i just want to know the difference.

Re: buying struts and stuff - 03/18/07 01:37 AM

ZZP's kit only comes with the front and rear sway bars.
The GMPP handling upgrade kit comes with front and rear sway bars, tubular trailing arms (not shown) and a front STB (extra bar shown).
I'd stick with the full GMPP handling kit.

Re: buying struts and stuff - 03/18/07 07:26 PM

i must have looked over hercmans' response about the mounts. i am to assume that new oem mounts will be fine, and will cause no problems, so i dont have to go with a different brand (which will undoubtedly cost more)?

Re: buying struts and stuff - 04/28/07 07:48 AM

Big Bump.

well, the "fit hit the shan" and i havent had any time to work on this. i might have an open weekend coming up and i was wondering if these mounts would suffice.

do these work?

Fronts: what are the differences? one is considerably more expensive. also are both sides (left/right) the same, swappable?

http://www.autozone.com/R,APP1178095/vehicleId,2396102/initialAction,partProductDetail/store,1783/partType,01047/shopping/partProductDetail.htm

Rears:
Left
http://www.autozone.com/R,APP1179064/vehicleId,2396102/initialAction,partProductDetail/store,1783/partType,01048/shopping/partProductDetail.htm
Right
http://www.autozone.com/R,APP1179066/vehicleId,2396102/initialAction,partProductDetail/store,1783/partType,01048/shopping/partProductDetail.htm

now i'm confused because for the rear mounts they have them specified for which side (right rear, left rear) but not for the front mounts. why is that?

holy crap. i just want to get this done and over with. thanks for all of your help and expertise

Re: buying struts and stuff - 04/28/07 09:55 AM

I can't see the mounts you posted, but yes the fronts are the same, and the rears are left and right specific. It has to do with the shape of the mount plate, in relation to the stud pattern. It will make sense to you, once you remove the old ones... wink

The rears should be marked left and right, so don't get discouraged. smile Maybe this pic will help: http://www.zzperformance.com/grand_prix/products1.php?id=398&catid=138
