How to improve MPG's

Well I've searched around and come up with these so far. But was wondering what may I have missed?

I'm not sure what kind car you have. I guess you have gt or gtp with 3.8 or supercharger engine. Get 3.1 engine from Ed at Cleveland, Ohio

Try to go 55 mph every highway and avoid rabbit jump. It works for me but I know everyone disagree with me.

Put it in neutral and cut the engine, and I don't know of many lights that run less than 60 seconds. A minute of idling x 10 stop lights is a lot of gas.

Alright, my tire pressure is good I just did that. And how much does a U-bend delete cost?

I've sat at lights for well over four minutes. Come hang out here in Atlanta and you can share in the misery.

wouldnt you think that turning the car off at every stop light would be killer on gas mileage due to having to start the car all the time? that seems like alota extra wear and tear than is needed. putting in N at a light makes better sence

I have half sister live in Atlanta. I went to Atlanta race track last Fall. I noticed the traffic was very heavy but it is still slowly moving around on weekend for race. I can't imagine how bad traffic on week only. I think they have like 6 lanes. That's insane. I'm glad I'm living in Ohio :-)

With modern fuel injection it doesn't take any extra gas to start. You will put a little more wear on the starter but that's it.

Old days with carbs it did take a little extra to start but even then it was better then just idling.

1. Accelerate very slowly
2. Avoid accelerating up hills at all costs
3. Start coasting if you see a yellow or red light ahead
4. Avoid drive thrus
5. Use A\C at highway speed if fan on high isn't confortable
6. Drive with windows down under 45 mph.
7. Make sure alignment is good
8. My car locks up the convertor in 4th gear at 43 mph, so I try and drive 44 in 40 zones and speed limit every where else.

My 03 GT is up at 26 MPG with 75% highway driving.

Normal people don't drive for good mpg, steetshaker!!! Only Prius drivers, or those smart enough to know that the only way to see better gas prices is to drive very defensively.

No one said it, but you never tuned your car after that GPX sticker was applied to the car. That extra 20 hp gain you need to configure in the PCM!

Depends on how long you sit there. If I just miss a left turn light, I know I will be there for 5 minutes, so I will frequently turn it off. As for Neutral, maybe my car is weird, but when I have my foot on the brake in Drive, and then shift in to Neutral, the RPMs climb about 200-300. Not much, but if you're trying to eek out every single drop you can, that's not the way to do it.

Putting the car in neutral at stoplights is not going to save you any gas. Next time you have a chance watch the RPM's while you're in D and stopped at a stoplight, then shift to N and see if they change. You'll see that the car idles at the exact same RPM's in D as it does in N so you won't save any gas by putting it in neutral. The best way and probably only way to save gas at a light is to shut the car off.

The most wear to the car comes from cold oil and waiting for pressure to build in the oil lines.

Restarting a warm car only wears the starter since the oil filter & lines are already full if anything it allows the engine a few moments to cool and takes the stress off the torque converter.

So it's sunday and I don't get payed till monday so I'm driving around with the gas light on. So I end up at a friends house but later decided to run home and grab my computer (we were going to get a lan party going) and as I'm on my way back to his house (it's now past midnight, and since I'm 17 I have curfew which is 11 weekdays(and sunday), 12 weekends )I am about to go through the light when it turns red, so since the needle is on E I figure I'll turn it off since this light is fairly long. Now I'm sitting there with my engine off and I notice this cop was parked in the parking lot across the street and he proceeds to walk over. He asks "Son what do you have your car off for? and you realize it's past curfew." and I told him "well I'm super low on gas and I want to save as much as possible" and he goes "Huh? well I'll have to give that a try, thanks for the tip you can go on and get outa here."

Cool. I was expecting something to go horribly wrong lol.

Oh and when I restarted it my car turned red.

Yes I have, and they screwed up twice.
I wouldn't buy those universal ones, or at least call them, but that doesn't mean they won't screw up still.
They sent me the wrong mirrors. I called them and arranged to return them. So I told them exactly what I needed over the phone, spoke to a manager. So I get another set and still wrong. I ended up splicing the wires on the new ones to get them to work with the harness in the door.
Best bet is ZZP man. I wouldn't skimp out on an 02 sensor eithr, if you are actually trying to improve mpg. ZZP is the lowest I believe.

Then should I get the "race front" O2 since their out of the Ac Delco?

Go with something other than Bosch, is what the community is saying. I have a Bosch and haven't had issues. I didn't know not to go with Bosch, but I did. I have Bosch front 02 sensor and Bosch Wideband sensor. Couldn't swap the wideband, came with the kit.

ZZP is out of The Ac Delco O2 Sensor.

Or call them and see if they have any, maybe not updated. I know you probably pay $75-$90 for 02 sensor at store.

Just don't drive it anymore. All joking aside maybe try changing your filters ie. fuel filter with a high quality one not the white box junk, (trust me on this one).

Does the '97 have Throttle body or Port Injection?

Throttle body, it's the part after your air intake and before your intake manifold.

I'm not sure what they call it. But it's not throttle body injection. TBI is simialar to a carberator where the injector is in the throttle body and the fuel is dispersed via the intake manifold. Our throttle body only handles air.

Its called sequential multiport fuel injection. So, a variant on port injection.

I wonder what they call the goofy set up on the Vortec motors? The injector is centered inside the intake manifold with 8 legs and a poppit valve for each cylinder.

I noticed a drop in fuel mileage when my cat got plugged...went from 28 down to 24 and also no power. I know it's not legal everywhere but I hollowed out my cat and got an O2 simulator so my engine light would be happy. Result was 29 MPG and the power was back. Maybe the U-bend delete would help too. I also noticed a small difference when I changed plugs, wires and put in a fresh air filter, I also use strictly synthetic oil in the engine and transmission. As others have said, it's important to keep up with the maintenance for maximum efficiency.
