NEXT MOD? - 10/11/08 05:39 PM
I just finished putting a new CAI and a 3.4" pulley on, now im wondering whats next. I was thinking since i upgraded the spark plugs a nd wires maybe coils would be the next best thing, any ideas?

you dont need to upgrade your wires or coils, stock are good up to a 12 second car, but plugs i would upgrade for sure to 104's, do you have supporting mods for that 3.4?

so you have just an intake and a 3.4? Have you read about KR at all? Your car is slower than it was when you started if those are your only 2 mods
Take the 3.4 off and do some exhaust work and tuning.

yes i do agree you need to check and see if you have any knock or anything

You'll need a 3" D/P, drilled 180* t-stat, tuning or a pre-tuned PCM, and Autolite 104 plugs.
And get something to scan with.

Front exhaust manifold and stock DP are very restrictive. If you can't afford a DP (down pipe) at least get rid of the U-bend. The front manifold can be replaced with a ZZP P-log. You need to read all of ZZP Tech tips and learn about your GTP before you grenade that motor.
http://www.zzperformance.com/grand_prix/articles.php Stock mufflers will support minor mods and keep it quiet.

So your saying its ok to change my front manifold but not the back? and how easy is the down pipe to install. i hate (and wont) bringing my car to the shop it looks like its a bolt on... but the u bend delete is a weld on? and i read up on the kr thing, i dont notice any knocking so far, all i have seen is that the idle is a tad rougher but acceleration wise the car is much faster, will the 104 spark plugs help at all?
Hi Zagnut,
If your Park Avenue Ultra is a 97-03, here's a couple of downpipe options for you to check out:
ZZP and
Ebay Iirc, your car doesn't have a U-bend. Hope that helps!

You are suppost to run 104 plugs when dropping pulley sizes, its a must, i would take that pulley off before you grenade that motor.

The DP & P-log are easy bolt in items. Just spray the bolts daily with PB Blaster or similiar for about a week before to loosen the rust. The rear manifold is not as restrictive and a serious PITA to remove. You will not hear the knock in these cars because of the antiknock sensors. They hear the knock and reduce timing, hence the KR.
A tip on the DP. Install all nuts & bolts slightly and ensure DP is centered in tunnel before tightening nuts & bolts. Somehow mine was off slightly and would sometimes hit when driving. I had to redo the whole procedure.

I reccommend reading more. You would know that you cant "feel" knock. Unless your car is a 15* and its really slow. It wont affect idle at all.

ok spent all night reading about everything and im left with one ? ive seen some people go with the autolite plugs other go with the ac delco 41-913, i will not be racing the car, i also hate changing the plugs in the car, obviously the platniums will stay in for longer will i be losing anything by going this route instead of copper?
From the FAQs, a good article on what plugs to use, and why:
