The problem I don't like with the crash tests, unless I am not understanding how they are performed, is that the cars are hitting a solid wall, that doesn't appear to be moving. Therefore, the vehicle is taking all the impact, instead of two objects taking impact.

...and I do have to give the Smart Car some credit...thats the third crash test film I've seen on that car (including one rammed into a jersey barrier at 60mph) and while it does react much like a basketball at least the cockpit appears to stay intact.

Testing cabin safety. If the occupants can survive that then they should be able to survive a car vs car impact.
