also see if they'll give you a printout of the VIN history of a vehicle if you're buying one.

VIN historys help sometimes. Though my VIN history showed up clear and the saleman claimed mine had never been in an accident, I'm pretty sure my car has been in a wreck before.

It won't show up if it was never reported. Not sure if carfax gets info from insurance reports or police/court reports or both.
