Too bad it's gonna be short lived with the new CAFE standards coming out. These could be the last of the V8 caddi's for a while.

darn tree huggin hippies. out to ruin everyone's fun.

IIRC, CAFE says all engines must get at least 35 MPG, right? Im sure theres more to it than that, but that is the gist, right?

Actually CAFE or Corporate Average Fuel Economy is the entire line of vehicles a manufacturer has the average MPG must be what ever the govt. mandates. The current CAFE average now is something like 24 mpg or so. That's how GM is able to sell the gas guzzlers. Plus there is a difference between passenger cars, trucks etc. Chrysler really pulled one off a few years ago when they were able to get the PT Cruiser classified as a truck.

Now here's the kicker that's gonna hurt the US branded performance cars. If a company sells less then something like 30,000 (not actual number but I used to prove the point)vehicles a year they do not have to comply with CAFE standards. Porche's sales numbers keep them from having to comply. Which means it's gonna be tougher to compete in the performance market unless you dedicate all you effort to one vehicle and let the rest of the line up suffer the fuel miser.

Ohh ya they have revised the truck segment to make it more realistic as to what each vehicle is classified as.

The Energy Independence and Security Act bill has officially been signed into law — the same document that calls for CAFE standards increased to 35 mpg by 2020.

The new CAFE standards will be phased in beginning in 2011

[edit] Current standards
Cars and light trucks are considered separately for CAFE and are held to different standards. As of early 2004, the average for cars must exceed 27.5 mpg and the light truck average must exceed 20.7 mpg Trucks under 8500 lb must average 22.5 mpg in 2008, 23.1 mpg in 2009, and 23.5 mpg in 2010. After this, new rules set varying targets based on truck size "footprint".

In late 2007, CAFE standards received their first overhaul in more than 30 years. On December 19, President Bush signed into law the Clean Energy Act of 2007, which requires in part that automakers boost fleetwide gas milage to 35 mpg by the year 2020. This requirement applies to all passenger automobiles, including "light trucks." Politicians had faced increased public pressure to raise CAFE standards; a July 2007 poll conducted in seven states revealed 84-90% in favor of legislating mandatory increases. [17]

Overall fuel economy for both cars and light trucks in the U.S. market reached its highest level in 1987, when manufacturers managed 26.2 mpg (8.98 L/100 km). The average in 2004 was 24.6 mpg.[18] In that time, vehicles increased in size from an average of 3,220 pounds to 4,066 lb (1,461 kg to 1,844 kg), in part due to an increase in truck ownership during that time from 28% to 53%.

A number of manufacturers choose to pay CAFE penalties rather than attempt to comply with the regulations. As of model year 2002, BMW, DaimlerChrysler (import fleet only), Ferrari, Lotus and Porsche failed the automobile CAFE requirement, while BMW and Volkswagen failed to meet the light truck requirement.
