Just to make you all feel a little better - 09/24/08 12:36 PM

As I've purused the car mags and internet articles and such and on here hearing well Car X has more power etc etc. I thought I'd put into perspective how far ahead of the curve our mighty 97-03 GPs were when they were introduced when it comes down to power.

Remember the GTP was rated at 240hp and a torque of 290 and the GT rated for 200hp and sorry I forget the torque.

These cars were all for sale in 97

Nissan Maxima 190/205
BMW 328I 138/133
Chrysler concorde 214/221
Infiniti I30 190/205
Mustang V6 150/215 V8 215/285
Taurus 145/170
Porche Boxster 201/181
MB C360 268/280
MB c280 194/199
Acura Integra type R 195/130
Acura CL 200/195
Camaro Z28 285/325

Granted I didn't go through all the makes and all the models but as you can see from this sampling of mostly four door sedans and couple of coupes for the "wow" factor the GT/GTP and the early SE's with the 3800 stood their ground mighty nicely.

So take pride in the fact that these cars when they were released were at/near the top when compared to it's competition.

Too bad they did'nt put the GP GPX prototype into production 300hp& 335tq 0-60 in 5.6 sec.I know one of our members has a big GPX on the side of his stock GT  please !these numbers are even better than the famed Buick GNX .Chico(pops)

Ohh I didn't even want to look at hp numbers from the 80s. The 84 Vette didn't even come close to the HP of our GPs wink Iirc the 91 ZR1 is the first C-4 vette to have beeter hp then our cars.

290? You sure? Mine's only rated 280.

Regardless, that's impressive. Thanks, Herc.

Here are the facts on Corvette hp#'s 1986 came out with the TPI 5.7 rated at 245hp and 340tq and in 1990 the ZR1 was an option the LT5 was rated at 375hp and jumped to 415hp in 93,and while the early 80's hp #'s were down they still had pretty good tq#'s ,and a little FYI the LT5 was built by Mercury Marine in Stillwater OK..Chico(pops)

My memory is goin lol. Now I'll have to go back and look at my book. Maybe the ZR1 was the first C4 to have over 300.

HP/weight would be more useful in determining actual power.

Only to real car guys. Most people just care about the HP, not even the torque.

It just dawned on me.

Look what the current LS series of engines produces compared to the "exotic" LT5.

Could you imagine a DOHC S/C'd LS engine would do?
