Richard is correct with the turbulance, but that applies more toward N/A cars where even flow is important. I'm not sure if it would matter with the supercharger sucking air in, but I'm sure it doesn't matter as much as N/A engines.

Open cone gives you flow improvements over stock, but the air is hotter than stock. For supercharged applications the hotter air isn't good... your supercharger heats it up even further and hot air is bad for knock retard (KR).

The point is to get the coolest air at a decent flow volume. So cold air or fenderwell intakes are the way to go. Fendwell might flow a little bit better in general, but you have to be concious of getting the filter wet and dirty very easily. CAI is a good year-round solution.

Either type of intake you can build yourself if you're handy.

While the K&N FIPK may be overpriced what it does offer is looks a great intake tube & a reasonable heat shield and they do send a dyno sheet for every kit,an open cone will suffice for most applications and while a FWI will supply the coldest air I think the bends and length negate any gains ,FYI I use the K&N kit in the GP ,the GTO and the TITAN.Chico(pops)

I found inlet air (at filter) while driving is the same at the filter as outside the car. While sitting still at idle that's when the temps jump.

I ran an experiment a couple years ago. I posted my results on the board so you could search for it. If you really want to.

Thanks for all the responses. I'll give it a go then I reckon.
(and it looks like I'll have to whip up a cool sig like most of you have as well. Luckily, I have mad shooping skills)
