What is that for small square paint part on mostly new car rear bumper? It looks like it pop out and plug in something? I think it look ugly to me but I still don't know what is for. Any idea what is that? Mostly, I seen from bmw or old model scion xb.

Thanks,
palsut

I believe those are sensors for when you back up. A small radar to sense how close an object is. The warning inside beeps. The faster the beep the closer you are.

If I understand what you're saying, they're back-up sensors. They'll sense the distance between the car and things behind it, and warn the driver if necessary.

Actually I know what is that for back up sensors. They usually have 4 of them for small circle black parts. I'm talking about other part that look like square.

I found link for picture from xb model. Look at left side of bumper. I hope it should work for link.

Is what you're talking about somewhere around 1.5" high and 2" wide or so?

If it's anything like the small square patch on the front of my G35 its for what they call a recovery hook or something similar.

My g/f's scion tC has those little square things. That pic is too small to tell anything, but i believe that they are for pulling you out of the mud when you go 4 wheeling in your powerful xB

ordonez1307: think you could check the owner's manual to verify? I'm kinda curious...

SlickGTP: Thank for answer and picture about that.

That's interesting. I think that's nice idea for vehicle recovery but what if car was down in ditch. The tow truck use this and decide pull it up that might scratch or rubbing paint on above if the car was downhill when tow truck is up there? It is hard to tell if it is working or not.
