When I went to pull my dad's 02 Explorer in tonight the brake lights didn't shut off after the car was off and the lights turned off. The tail lights and third brake light all stayed on. I fiddled with the wire connection on the brake pedal and managed to get them to turn off, any idea why this happened and any suggestions to fix it if it happens again?

theres a sensor behind the brake, it might have been fiddled with and "thought" the brake was actually depressed...

Sometimes the switch bracket gets bent. Just bend it back into place. Or sometimes the switch gums up and gets stuck. If the bracket isn't bent then it's time for a new switch.

Interestingly enough, a friend of mine has an 07 Mustang, and she had that problem several times...killed her battery at least twice, and she went to the dealer at least twice to get it fixed. Apparently, they didn't know what they were doing, and it kept having the problem. Don't know if it still is or not.

I had a friend with a '99 'Stang that had the exact same issue. Her brakelight switch messed up twice leaving the tail lights on. It must be a Ford thing, eh?

Thanks for all the suggestions. It hasn't happened again yet but when it does I'll check that switch bracket.

As for the truck in general I'm surprised how well it's held together. It's my dad's work truck and he's not great on the maintenance part so it barely gets its oil changes on time but it's got 145,000 miles and the engine is running strong considering it has never gotten any maintenance past oil changes. The trans is a completely different story, slipping and bad shifts have been a normal occurrence since 80,000 miles or so, but like Grand Prix's it happens on every single truck.

My nephew has issues with the lights burning out all the time on his 02 explorer, and my mom 2000 taurus had to go to the dealership to get the lamp switch redone because it was a recall on those.
