Well my bike took some damage yesterday.

All this commuting on the bike I've done since I've been in TX has really put a toll on my rear tire. 17,000 miles on it and plenty of tread but it's shaped like a car tire.

Went into a downhill right with the road sloping left to right at about 15*

Speed was a little high for the turn so I stood the bike upright aimed the outside of the turn and applied the brakes(just like what was tought at MSF) totally expecting grass if I couldn't woe up in time. Well with the angle of the road and the bike riding on the "corner" of the tire my rear tire locked up sending the rear end down hill and out from underneith me.

I took a good roll to the outside of the turn the bike slid to the inside on the down hill side of the turn.

In all the tumbling I managed to keep an eye on my baby as parts were flying across the road and the bike sliding away making an angry grinding noise.

I immediately popped up checked my body over nothing serious a couple of hot spots from my raspberries and a sore thumb. I think I hyper extended it. It's all swollen and bruised. I see the doc tomarrow for it.

Walked over the bike started to pick it up and two guys stopped to help. Got the bike moved to level ground. Made a quick inspection of the bike.

Bars slightly twisted(not sure if the bar just needs adjusted or if it's bent. Forks still true. front turn signal bent lense missing bulb still in place and operational. Floor board gouged good, clutch handle gouged good but operational. Shift pedal bent all out of shape. Had to bend the heal shifter out so I could up shift. Left saddle bag scrapped pretty bad but no holes. Head light ring slight scrape. Windsheild bracket slight scrape. Front fender gouged pretty good.

After I got my nerves together started the bike up and drove home.

So now the bike sits in the garage waiting for my thumb to get better so I can turn a wrench without pain. Hurts just to hold a pen.

So until I can get some parts off and get a good look all the damage looks like I can fix it myself. The handle bars and risers are yet to be determined.

Ouch that sucks, but at least your ok. You'll probably have to get a big thumb cast/splint thing put on which will really suck, but it could have been much worse.

Sounds like you got lucky Herc. Hoping for a quick recovery and glad you will be able to ride again soon enough.

Glad you're okay. (mostly)

That thumb is probably going to bother you for a little while, though.

Bike update. Shift linkage straigtened out. Turn signal replaced. Saddle bag removed. Damage not as extensive as first thought. Risers are fine. Handle bar slightly bent. Requires replacement. So since I have to replace the bars I'll replace the grips while I'm at it. Clutch lever housing has some gouges. May... smooth it out and paint it or might replace don't know yet.

It sure sucks when you crunch something you have worked so hard on to make unique...but like everyone has said, you being good is the most important part. A fractured thumb can be considered pretty lightweight when it comes to bike accidents.
I was extremely fortunate with the three bikes I owned, had some close calls but never laid one down (part of the reason I'm chicken to get another one...and I have other priorities)

Hope you and your bike are back to 100% very soon!

Glad you are OK, once you get the bike going again, I highly recommend a Metzler 880 rear tire. You need to run more curves and drag them pegs more to keep that tire rounded. LOL. I know tires are expensive, but when you are riding on about four square inches, they are worth it.
I also swear by dyna beads instead of wheel weights.

Unfortunately there just isn't much in the way of curves around here without going an hour and half away.

I am looking at the Metzler 880. I can get it in a 200 without fitment issues.

My VTX comes with a 180/70-16 and I also went with a 200/60-16. It fills the fender nicely. What about your white walls though? Are you going to go away from them? I really thought about going Darkside with a Goodyear Triple Tread 205/60/15 but I just could not pull the trigger, I like to scrape my pegs often, and yes it is possible on a 800 pound V-twin. Remember it's a Honda!

I'll stick with the WWWs I can make any tire a WWW. Stock on the Vstar is a 170/?/15 The Metzler ME880s are the only 200 that will fit with clearance on the drive shaft. I can't remember if it's a 60 or 70 series though.

Guess what the wife and I bought for her to learn to ride on? 07 V Star 650 Classic. It was 100% her decision on getting a bike and which one. We went to a bike shop and I left her with the owner who showed her 10 different starter bikes. She says the second she sat on it, she knew it was "the one". Black with chrome spoke wheels, which means more dang cleaning for me.

Congrats. If you have any questions about the scoot send them my way. Also check out CCND650.com It's a delphi site for the 650s.

The friction zone on that bike can be a bit tough for a beginner so be patient. It's very very narrow.

Ohh those spokes aren't chrome. They'll dull out in no time flat. Hate em. But your really short on wheel options unless you want to spend a grand or change out the front end or have a new axle machined.

After 20 years of marriage, I have learned that babying her only leads to good things coming my
way.

Beginner my butt. I killed it leaving the bike dealership the first time I rode it and also leaving my street. Considering my bike has a hydraulic clutch and 107 lb ft of TQ and this bike has 37 lb ft of TQ and a standard clutch, the difference is incredible.
