Someone posted on ClubGP that he was paying $3.10 for high grade gas. He went to the airport to check the price of avgas (100 octane), in his area it was $3.40/gal.
Looks like avgas is becoming a little more affordable than it has been in the past, with the price of gas hitting all time highs.
I'm going out of town this weekend for easter with the in-laws in Abilene, but I might make plans for the next weekend to make a call out to the airport and see how much avgas is going for here. I just might be going out there to get a tank full.

I just did a search on av fuel prices in my area, I can get it from $2.75/gal to over $5/gal.
I paid $2.89/gal on my last fill up.

Geeze. How is that gas different? Just octane? No side effects?

Did a little more looking into, the higher $5+/gal is for full service.
I found a little airport about 10-15 miles away from me that is self service, pay at the pump for $3.20/gal.
That's less than a five dollar difference per fill up for 100 octane fuel.
Is avgas safe for us to use? Are there any additives in avgas that are harmful to our engines?
I need some input on this.
I want to try a tank full.

Not sure how it relates to auto gas. I was a Boiler Tech in the Navy and we normally used what is called DFM for fuel to fire the boilers. It's a grade of diesal. There were times when I was stationed on aircraft carriers that we burned jet fuel, they called it JP-5. JP-5 was described to me a a supergrade kerosene. The JP-5 burned a lot cleaner, but it also burned at quite a higher temperature. This came in handy because it meant less carbon deposits on the firesides of the tubes, plus the higher combustion temps made already collected carbon deposits fall free and get expended up through the smoke stack. I'd really like to know how jet fuel compares to 93 octane auto fuel.

There is a gas station in my area (forget if it's chevron or 76) that sells 100 or 110 octane (I forget). Your post has me wondering how much they charge... I might have to ask now.

I posted about this on my local F-body forum, AvGas is 100LL, low lead. It's not designed to be used in automotive applications, it's designed to be used in aviation applications. I was even told I'd be pretty lucky if I was even able to drive my car right up to the pump before someone would come screaming out yelling at me for putting 100LL in my car. There appears to be some kind of liablilty issue at hand if they allow me to use 100LL in my car, the moron clause. "...but the moron put 100LL in his car!", "did you tell him he couldn't?", "no I didn't, but he's the moron that put 100LL in his own car!"
Doesn't look like 100LL would be a good idea, but 100-110 octane racing fuel would be just fine. I wish I could get a hold of something more than 93, but I guess I should consider myself luck. Anywhere north of here gets 92 octane.

I only get 92 at the pump here.

When I was in the Marines I was a Motor Transport Aircraft Refueler. I would drive a tractor trailer with a 4800 gallon tanker trailer. We used JP-5 for all of our aircraft. All the Aviation Ground Equipment and all of our Diesel trucks used it as well. It seems to be a good replacement for Diesel but not for Gasoline, or MoGas. I think AvGas is something completely different than JP-5. Don't quote me on it though.

we use JP-8 here for our jets. It is just a higher grade of the JP-5. I used to live near a gast station that had 110 octane. I remember one time it was cheaper than the 82 around here. crazy. i think the highest we have is 96. i am not sure though.

JP-4, JP-5, and JP-8 are all diesel/kerosene type fuels with various additives for ant-freeze etc. Avgas is a gasoline type fuel with special additives that are incompatable with our cars. Don't use it. Mogas is your standard 87 octane fuel.

bobby I think I was reading the same thead topic, and the problem with it is the lead. I'm not sure I would trust low-lead either. might not be worth saving a few bucks.

Yeah, I've decided against it.
I remember back in the day that was the thing to do, use AvGas, but back then regular gas was leaded gas.

i'll ask my dad in the morning what using this will do to your car since he is the supervisor at the waco regional airport.

i finally got around to asking my dad about this fuel today and he said that it is possible to run it in a car but not recomended because the octane level is much higher then 100 since its rated for use in high altitudes. therefore you will more then likely need to be running some serious mods and only use for track day.
