Just heard on our local news that this is a fact, though the numbers seem a bit high to me:

Washing and waxing your car reduces drag and can increase your fuel mileage by 7%.

That means if you get 27mpg on the highway, you could get an extra 2mpg by washing and waxing your car.

Amazing.

That's why they keep planes extra clean on the outside, less drag. wink

Poor ricers with primer paint, no wonder they can't go fast.

Where are these clean planes?? They're not at Logan.

If I wax my truck and put the tailgate down, I bet I can get a couple more miles per gallon. Although if I wax my truck, it might take the Macco finish right off.

Maybe I'll wax the bike and just ride at full tuck all the time. I'd be cool...

I've done that. We took the wifes truck to Abilene one time and I wanted to see if the gas mileage improved with the tailgate off. I took it off and gained a couple of miles per gallon.

What no gain from the belt covers?

As for a clean and waxed car versus mileage. Yes it would make a difference but not to the extent that you'd see from tankfull to tankfull. Yes planes are washed and some even waxed. Planes are more suseptable to an increase of drag co-e of .01 then any car is at 65mph.
