so when i bought my 98 gtp guy said he lost the key for the doors (i thought it was a one key all locks) but the key i have works in the ing and trunk. he had a crap viper alarm in it that shorted out 2 days after owning the car so i pulled it out. right now i have to leave my car unlocked all the time, where i live is not a good idea. new lock cyl is out of my price range right now. i have 3 key fobs 1 is for a 98 grand prix gt, the other 2 are for a 97 gm (the square ones) was told they were for a 97 grand prix but look nothing like the one i got for a 98. i googled how to program them and everything i try doesnt seem to work. i dont know if im doing it wrong, but would really like to hear from someone who has done it b4. thank you.

i would like to also add under my hood i have a warning sticker from the factory saying i have a remote starter. do i need a diff key fob. cause i dont know what the factory key fob should look like with remote starter.

a factory remote start for a 98 GTP? that doesn't sound right, but I guess it's possible. There are write-ups here (check the FAQs) that worked for others. Sorry that I can't answer your request, since I've never done the key/fob reprogram before. I'm sure that someone that's lurking around has done it. Sorry that I can't be of any help to you on this one.

My wife's Acadia has factory remote start and it does have a different fob than the ones without the FRS. On her's there is an extra button for the starter, but yeah I wasn't aware there was a FRS available for the pre 04 models.

I take it your car didn't come with the owners manual? Instructions for programming the fob is in the owners manual.

You could still possibly have the wrong remote for the car! I know that the remote I have has 3 buttons, unlock, lock, and trunk. I found one on ebay that looked the same and was cheap so I bought it thinking it would work but it didn't! Ended up having to get one with the same numbers that was on the back of my original one(stopped working) and once I did that, I was able to program it and been working ever since.

I thought I had it favorited somewhere but I did find these on here buried within the search.

I found the 2002 owner's manual online, not sure why you're getting 5 chimes though:

Entering Programming Mode
To program features, your vehicle must be in this
programming mode. Follow these steps:
1. Turn the ignition key to LOCK or OFF.
2. Remove the MALL PGM fuse from the instrument
panel fuse block. See “Fuses and Circuit Breakers”
in the Index.
3. Turn the ignition key to ACCESSORY.
4. Count the number of chimes you hear. You will hear
up to four chimes, depending on vehicle content. See
“Multifunction Alarm Locks and Lighting Choices”
earlier in this section.
You can now program your choices. After programming
a feature, you can exit the programming mode at
any time.
Exiting Programming Mode
To exit programming mode, turn the key from
ACCESSORY to OFF and put the MALL PGM fuse
back into the instrument panel fuse block.

Remote Driver’s Unlock Control
(If Equipped)
With the remote driver’s unlock control feature, you can
program your vehicle to do the following:
When you press UNLOCK on your remote keyless
entry transmitter, the driver’s door will unlock, and
when you press UNLOCK on your remote keyless
entry transmitter again within five seconds, all doors
will unlock.
Programmable Modes
Mode 1: Remote All Doors Unlock – When you press
UNLOCK on the remote keyless entry transmitter once,
all doors will unlock.
Mode 2: Remote Driver’s Door and All Doors
Unlock – When you press UNLOCK on the remote
keyless entry transmitter once, the driver’s door will
unlock. If you press UNLOCK again within five seconds,
all doors will unlock.
Before your vehicle was shipped from the factory, it was
programmed to Mode 2. The mode to which your
vehicle was programmed may have been changed since
it left the factory. To determine the mode to which your
vehicle is programmed or to program your vehicle to a
different mode, do the following:
1. Follow the instructions for “Entering Programming
Mode” listed previously.
2. Press UNLOCK on the remote keyless
entry transmitter.
3. Count the number of chimes you hear. The number
of chimes tells you which mode the vehicle is set for.
If you do not wish to change the current mode, you
can either exit the programming mode by following
the instructions earlier in this section or program the
next feature available on your vehicle.
4. Press UNLOCK on the remote keyless entry
transmitter again to change the current mode.
5. Repeat Step 4 until you hear the number of chimes
that matches the mode you want.
The mode you selected is now set. You can either exit
the programming mode by following the instructions
earlier in this section or program the next feature
available on your vehicle.

GTPJesse,
Here's the info from the 99 Owner's Manual:

Entering Programming Mode
To program features, your vehicle must be in this
programming mode. Follow these steps:
1. Turn the ignition key to LOCK or OFF.
2. Remove the MALL PGM fuse from the instrument
panel fuse block. See “Fuses and Circuit Breakers”
in the Index.
3. Turn the ignition key to ACCESSORY.
4. Count the number of chimes you hear. You will hear
two to four chimes, depending on vehicle features.
Refer to the chart shown previously for available
programming choices.
You can now program your choices. After programming a
feature, you can exit the programming mode at anytime.
Exiting Programming Mode
To exit programming mode, turn the key from
ACCESSORY to OFF and put the MALL PGM fuse
back into the instrument panel fuse block.

Remote Lock and Unlock Confirmation
Your vehicle can be programmed to one of the
following modes.
Mode 1: Both Features Off (Remote lock and unlock
confirmation are disabled.) (No lights flash)

The vehicle comes with this feature set in mode 4.
To change the mode do the following:
1. Follow the instructions for “Entering Programming
Mode” listed previously.
2. Press the LOCK button on the remote keyless
entry transmitter.
3. Count the number of chimes you hear. The number
of chimes tells you which mode the vehicle is set for.
You change the mode by pressing LOCK on the
remote keyless entry transmitter again.
4. Repeat Step 2 until you hear the number of chimes
that matches the mode you want.
The mode you selected is now set. You can either exit
the programming mode by following the instructions
earlier in this section or program the next feature available on your vehicle.
