Welcome to the site! there are two different GPs with the 3800: the GT (L36 engine with the 4T65E transmission) and the GTP (L67 with 4T65EHD). In 97, your tranny was, indeed, vacuum modulated, and there's been plenty of talk about that vacuum system causing some problems that are very unique to that year. If you search here and wait for one of those that own(ed) that car, you'll find what you're looking for.

Since the car is completely skipping third gear that generally means something internal has broken that will require removing/rebuilding the unit. The vacuum modular you're talking about only effects line pressure. If the transmission shifts fine through all the other gears, then it's likely not the issue. Probably not the news you were hoping for...

To test and see if third gear is totally gone, you can put the transmission in limp mode. If you unplug the electrical connector on the front, and try to drive the car, it will default to third gear. If you have third gear in this instance, it's likely an electrical problem and you should check the harness for any damaged wires.

FYI...
97 GT's get the 4T60E transmission.

thanks, Bobby. Am I to assume that the 97GTP was fitted with the 4T60EHD, then?

No, I think the 97 GTP did get the 4T65E-HD.
From what I found it's just the 97 GT that got the "60" series.

I don't know how many times I have said this in the last week on this forum alone, but the 97 GTP's were not vacuum modulated, they were 4t65e's.

it's the shadow paint job. the text of your typing blends in with the paint which blends in with the shadows which makes it impossible to see...or at least that's what I'm rolling with!
