Probably be better off using the red lens paint that's transparent rather than regular paint. It would allow a bit more light to pass through due to thinner application.

The light for the needle goes from the base of the needle where it attaches to the cluster, not from behind it. So I think transparent paint would be even worse.
I think the reflective paint works better because it's not opaque like stuff I used and actually reflects light back through the clear plastic needle.

I think RS is right about the paint being reflective.
Here's my night shot
I had extra needles from when I pulled the face off at the JY so I could experiment with reds. I tried a "clear" red for tail lights and it just didn't look right.
This will work for me. I was tired of having needles half orange half yellow this needle completely yellow this needle completely orange etc etc.
