Hey all.
Not sure if this is posted anywhere, musnt've looked hard enough.

I noticed that in the mornings or when my engine isn't heated up to the peak running condition you might say, i get a nice whine from my engine when i accellerate, and it gets progressively louder when i turn the wheel.

I googled this and it said that my steering fluid may / may not be low or getting low, a simple top off would do the trick. If thats the case, how on EARTH do i get to it, i looked and its tucked way the hell deep passenger side!

Thanks.

Long funnel. You can reach back and undo the cap form the top, as well as fill it.

Plenty of straws. No, i'm just kidding. Actually, I think Blackarrow had bought some long funnels online somewhere. Could be wrong though.

Would the low fluid cause the whining though??
If it helps my car is at 109k.

Power steering fluid or possibly power steering pump. Best bet fill up on power steering fluid that's probably the reason. When mine was whining it was low on steering fluid.

The cap is behind the alternator. You need a funnel with a short hose and a good eye to see when its filling up

I pulled out as much as I could with a pump and then replaced it with Valvoline Synthetic fluid with leak stop and seal conditioner. This stuff has fixed two small leaks in prior cars. The noise in my car almost went completely away.

they have long funnels at autozone for pretty cheap. Its worth the investment if youre keeping the car for long

So i topped off the PS Fluid today .. took her for a spin .. not sure if it takes a bit for it to realize its full and stop making the noise? I noticed it wasn't as LOUD but it was still there when i drove it around the block.

Any other suggestions?

To be honest, my car has had a faint whine since the day i got it. It could just be the tranny. I just got used to it. But my car has all sorts of little noises that ive just grown acustomed to.

does it get louder when turning still like it used to?

a faint whine could be a vacuum leak but it wouldn't get louder as you turn and it wouldn't get quieter by filling up your PS fluid.

You could just leave it lol.

Well when i buy a car i look for low mileage and condition and for 5k youll never find a nice grand prix that has no scratches no rust, and under 25k.But if you enjoy buying cars with 100k and then keep fixing it be my guest.

lol :p

Regardless! The engine still makes a whine when accelerating hard and turning while accelerating hard.

PS Fluid was extremely low thought so it definately didn't hurt filling it up!

What colour would / could it be if it needs to be changed .. or could it just be 'low' and need to be topped off? Thanks.

Its more than likely not going to have been changed for a while, making it a dark brown color.

It should be reddish.

It probably worth dropping the pan and doing a fluid/filter change.

My car has a similar PS problem. I noticed a louder than average whine one day, checked the PS fluid and it was really low. Topped it off and the whine got a good deal quieter but didn't go away. When cold, it gets louder when I turn the wheel. And sometimes gets louder after a more aggressive/abrubt turn. I imagine it's the PS pump failing. Any other theories. I've been content to leave it alone for the last year and it hasn't gotten worse.

Yeah i'm probably just going to check the tranny fluid and go from there. If it starts to get REAL bad i'll get it fixed under warranty haah.
