The best way I can describe it is, it's the low tone given out by say Flowmaster 40 series that resonates in the cabin of the car, generally at cruising speeds. It can get so bad sometimes that it'll almost rattle your teeth out.
50 series Flowmaster give little to no drone.
I killed all of my drone by adding a set of resonated tips. I still have the deep tone sound, just not as loud, but still loud enough that I can set off a car alarm by burping the throttle as I drive by it.

blacknred. If you want to meet up, you can take my ride for a spin to hear the 50's. That should tell you if you like them or if you want to go louder (40's). Just let me know mate!

Cheers!

p.s. Austin! Love the new Sig thumbsup

Drone is basically a flat monotone sound. The best example I can give....you know when your on a commercial jet up in the air and how the engines make that flat humming sound the whole flight....kinda like that almost.

Hello,

My understanding is......
Not all cars have drone..even with loud exhaust.
Drone happens when 2 tones meet at the same level. Usually, on a car, drone comes from 2-3 things....
1. Exhaust noise
2. Engine noise
3. Road noise
The worst drone is when all 3 meet....That's the one that "rattles your teeth".....It sounds and feels like a deep bass hit on a kickin stereo.

Later now,
Clint

its been my experience that the longer the distance between the cat and the mufflers the worse the "drone" will be...I believe it comes from exhaust pulses creating a drum effect in a long hollow pipe...I dropped the stock muffs off my car altogether replacing them with Ansa tips, but by leaving the factory resonator in place behind the cat I have experienced no drone at highways speeds at all...even though I can clearly hear the exhaust...it just doesnt sound like its inside the car.

You will know it when you hear it I get drone when the motor is around 1500-1700rpm in hi gear.

From my experience I think alot of the drone is caused by a muffler thats in the "breaking in" period. When I got my exhaust done on the Grand Am it was pretty quiet, but it had a very deep rumbling tone. Couple months later it was droning pretty bad inside the car between 1500 & 2000 rpms I was about to look for something else. It eventually settled into a nice mellow tone and it doesn't even drone that much inside anymore.
