ok, so i slid on ice the other day and bumped a post, not really that hard, but I was suprised to find that it cracked the rim. drove the car at the bare minimum until i got a new used rim from ed morand and replaced it. car was making this noise whenever i accelerated. a kinda loud helicopter sound. figured it was because of the damaged rim. but now that i have the new rim, it still makes this noise just the same. what else could i have potentially damaged? noise sound familiar to any of you? it sounds like a helicopter blade spinning and as i go faster, the helicopter sound gets faster. very slight vibration noticed, nothing really shakey. no steering issues. it was the rear driver side wheel.

Sounds like the impact damaged a wheel bearing; they're a sealed hub assembly, which includes the ABS Sensor: Timken

heres Herc's front hub write-up:

http://www.robandcatsworld.com/hub.htm

and torque specs for the front hub:

http://www.grandprix.net/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=006888;p=2#000022

easy as sin. especially with that write up of Herc's.

Rear wheel hub bearings are easy, since there are no drive axles to work around.

1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove rear wheel.
3. Remove rear caliper bracket & brake rotor. Support the brake caliper so it doesn't hang by the brake hose.
4. Remove ABS harness & electrical connector.
5.Remove the rear wheel hub-to-knuckle bolts.
6. Remove the rear wheel hub from the knuckle. (Use a B.F.H. if necessary... hammer )

When installing the hub, tighten the hub mounting bolts to 75 N.m (55 lb ft).
When installing the rear caliper bracket bolts, be sure to use Loc-tite and torque to 92 lb ft.

about the same thing as BlackArrow's write up. just a little more in-depth.

Call around to a few repair shops, ask if they install owner supplied parts, and get some estimates. smile

It'll be cheaper to get one yourself, but you'll have to find a smaller or independent shop to put it on. I find a lot of the shops around here won't let you haul in your own parts because they are "worried about liability".

Just a word of advice though, by the time you pay a shop to do this, you could have a pile of new tools for the same price. If you know someone with a garage get in touch with them and tell em' you'll buy the beer if they let you use their garage for a couple hours. You'll come out ahead if you do this on your own.
