Does anyone know if it is a bad thing to shift into neutral to get the maximum coast while going downhill? I'm not concerned about the brakes not working(I know that sounds insane) as much as any potential tranny damage that may happen when shifting back into drive. If the GP had a standard trans there wouldn't be any prob, but what about an automatic? I tried doing this once. I coasted five miles at 65mph with the rpm's at 1000. It boosted my avg mpg to 45. I slowed to about 5 mph before shifting it back into drive because I did not know if shifting back into drive at 50 would screw up the tranny.

No. Just shift right back in and it will correct the rpm's. To be safer, put your foot on the gas and bring the rpms's up to around 2k. This is appropriate for crusing and 65. It will get the engine spinning as fast as the tranny again. I think. As you said, it's easier with a stick.
Maybe your next project can be to get the car to turn off and coast............

Yeah, except the trip computer won't correct the mileage. What do they teach at that school you go to? Snappy one liners. You are by far the wittiest(sp?) motherf'r of this group.

I go to a very dry business school that knows sh*t about cars. Good school though. Thanks for the motherf'r comment. Originally posted by damojo: I love the one liners. Makes me read it twice...... -Andrew

If you merely shift to neutral, the engine's still running and circulating the fluid, so it'll cause no harm. Regards, Gary in Sandy Eggo
