This is for a friends car, and since he is mechanically illiterate, (not to say i'm much better). I am trying to get some info for him. Little background: 1997 GT, 124000 miles. He's had it since 100K, no major fixes, just basic care. Gas gauge has never worked, once it gets to 1/4 tank it shoots back up to read like it's full again. We think he ran out of gas the other night, it started die-ing and wouldn't stay running, and finally wouldn't start. Got some gas in it, messed with it for about 10 min. then started just fine. That's about the same time I found out it miss-fires at around 4K. Changes the plugs (they were pretty worn) but it still does same thing. I don't know how long this has been going on. If it were my car i would have known right away since I tend to run the RPMs up, but I don't know if he ever gets it that high. Any thoughts?? Wires? Coils? Fuel? thanks very much. At a 100k he's ready for complete service, plugs wires, fuel filter, trans service, ect. there are many possibilities for a high end missfire and since he's a mechanical retard, take it to a shop .Chico.

if he is revving it ti 4k rpm while parkes, he is hitting the rev limiter. when the car is in gear that rev limiter is removed

Agree with Chico. It sounds like fuel isn't going far enough to where it should. Hope it's not the fuel pump resistor or fuel pump. Let us know what happens.

If you have a multimeter, you can check the coils for continuity. Set the meter to ohms, and the reading should be around 11 to 14 if they are good. Next thing would be the wires - replace them. If that doesn't help move on to checking the fuel pressure.

Ok, newbie mistake. He is hitting the rev-limiter when in park, because when he's driving, I don't think it misses. Thanks guys. I will go ahead and change the fuel filter and get some plug wires. thanks for the help

97-99 SE's were sold with a 3.8 option. After 99, no such luck. I rarely ever see an SE with a 3.8, though, since if you wanted it that badly, you could have just gotten a GT.

I've never seen that before... I just assumed that it was always a 3.1L... I guess you learn something new everyday
