My 03 GP GT has started making a noise and it seems that its coming from the engine compartment. It sounds like a distant motor boat (or kind of like a kid's bicycle with a playing card flipping against the spokes) and you hear it above 30MPH.

Shifting into nuetral above 30MPH proves the noise is not engine RPM dependant and A/C, steering, brakes have no effect. Its hard to tell but I think I can feel the vibration in the steering wheel.

I'll be taking it into the shop on Thursday and was hoping to be able to ask for the right fix. After all I don't want to be a dummy. If any of you find GP owners have any similar experiences please share your finding with me.

I've got 35K miles on this car and besides some rattles it has been a fine performer and I'm glad to own it.

Adrian

Just had this experience.

Check your tires FIRST.

I spent a pretty penny trying to fix this noise; changed the wheel bearing, tie rods, etc, and it was a bad tire making the noise you're describing. I saw a similar post advising checking tires while I was doing all that, and I went to get a new pair of tires the next day; noise was gone.

Good luck.

Tires are one probable source of this motorboating sound so I'll rotate the tires and see if the noise shifts to the rear.

I did inspect the tires and they look in good shape. If they are making the noise I would suspect internal damage like delamination. Kind of scary isn't it.

Thanks for the tip.

Other than that seems like the wheel bearing/hub. Seems like a random issue... I've got almost 88K miles on my 01 with no noises, my brother's got 45K on his 99 and his bearings are making noise.

My tire looked okay too .. It had been in the shop for the past week as well, so it didn't go anywhere, and it didn't make that noise before it went it.

Very strange indeed. Don't know how or why it started making noise after that, but when I got the new tires, the guys there said it was most likely some tread seperation.

That's interesting. Tires would've been my last guess. I am experiencing something similar although it is relative to engine rpm. Only when the engine is under a load will I hear this rattle. What do you think is causing this one, guys and girls?

tires is a very common problem with it... see if it does it sitting still, or only driving, that would be a big clue there, and while sitting still, put the tranny in neutral and rev the engine alil bit listening for the sound

I tried reving in neutral and couldn't seem to get it to make the noise. It only seems to happen when the engine is under a load. This is very frustrating. I need to figure this out so I can fix it on Sat. Any ideas?

Motorboating Solved. The dealer replaced the left front wheel hub and solved the problem. I was told that this hub failure happend from time to time.

Thanks to all who helped in this diagnosis. This is a fine group of Grand Prix owners that's willing to lend a helping hand.
