I'm looking into getting an '02 Grand Prix GTP for $7400. The car has 73000 miles on it. I'd like to know several things. One, is this a good price for this car with this amount of miles on it? What are things I should look for on the car and what should I look for when I take it for a drive. Are there any specific problems these cars have? What are some costs that might come up soon (timing belt, water pump ect). I want to know if this is a pretty good deal or I'm getting myself into something that will blow up 20000 miles down the road. Thanks for the help.

The 3800 has a timing chain, not a belt, so that's one less thing you'll have to worry about.

The 3800's are a pretty solid engine when it comes to reliablity. Some are seeing upwards of 200k on the odometer.

02's are a good year so I don't think you should have to much to worry about.
I'm sure others will enlighten you even more.

Great, thanks for the help. Do you think that's a fair price for the mileage given?

I think it sounds like a fair price. It just depends on several things.

I don't know what exactly the car is or if you're getting it from a private party or the dealership.

For example, a 2002 4 door GTP with 73K is $11,xxx for retail...or $8,xxx from a private party. Just look on Kelly Blue Book or Nadaguides to get a better idea since you have all the info on the car.

Do you have to worry about the water pump, alternator, ect? When do those tend to cut out on those cars?

I think it just depends really. The water pump was just replaced in my car before I got it with 91K on it...but it was also 8 years old. Then the engine went at 108K...but that's a whole different story...

Flog the tranny on the test drive. Any signs of slippage or delayed shifting walk away.

The 3800 is a great motor. The usual stuff like water pumps alternators etc. are run of the mill pricing. I have 93k on my GTP and both are still original with no issues. Front wheel bearings will make a hum if need replaced. I had to replace both by 85k. They run $150 each. But easy DIY. Ohters complain of electrical issues.

Each car is different. If you test drive it and everything seams good grab it.

Some people have had no problems while others seam to go from one issue to another.

Happy hunting.

PS beware of modded cars intakes etc. They may have been beat on and the tranny suspect. Not to scare you off but the trannys do fine and last a good time if they aren't beat on like trying to do burnouts and racing every weekend.

Great, thanks for all the help guys. From what the guy has said, it's his sister's car and they are an Indian family. I'll go check it out this next week and go from there.
