I want to put a intake on my car but I am strapped for cash. I was thinking hey i'll build one but I still have the 98 coolant bottle and the owner on paper aka my dad doesn't want me to move it so it is very cramped area. This makes making a box difficult and more trouble then its worth right now. I figured this out after I took my stock box all apart and removed it from the car lol. So now i am looking at my drop in k&n that is in it and wondering well if I gut the airbox will it do much for me. I know it won't be as good as a real CAI but what gains if any will i get? Also how do I do it?Do I just remove that tubing in the box or do I remove that whole wall that the filter is against?
Sorry for rambling that seems to be my thing on this forum lol. laugh

The 97-98 intake F duct is really restrictive. If I were you I would pick up a 99+ intake and gut that, and get a nice K&N drop in filter. The 99+ airboxs aren't too restrictive, at least much less so than the 97-98 ones

Maybe since it's factory your dad will not mind as much! smile

LOL ya the sad thing is it's not the intake that he minds its the damn coolant bottle. I keep trying to say that they moved it to the strut tower in 99 and didn't change anything to do it but he wont move it so I'm screwed for an intake. I guess I could do a FWI but even with my stock intake the filter gets black in one day. I drive about 150-200kilometers a day on backroads. My poor dirty K&N.

Just do it and don't tell him. The switch over is so fast and painless, you can do it while he's not looking. :p

Score I just traced my air box front back laft/right sides onto cardboard and think I can simplify it so that it will work. Now If I get the stock tube from a 99+ GP will that work just as well as the plumbing supplies because i really don't want to use those elbows. I am trying to make this somewhat of a show car. I think I will use plexi for the box but I am wondering what should I use to put it together? I remember austinGTP Had a thread on how to make fog covers and I was wondering do you think that cement would be alright with engine temps? If it will work i can make my fog covers at the same time lol .

An open cone should suck no more dirt in than a gutted airbox. Both are breathing the same air, regardless of enclosure. The only thing you could truly do to help it, is to add a pre-filter to the cone filter.

Well I really don't want to do a open cone. I was wondering (this question is more for crimpton or anyone else who has mad a box out of plexi) were did you get it and how much was it? I figure I will need to use about a 4'x3'of it.
Also how did you do the lid I have a few ideas but none that would look as clean as what I have seen.

We have a company that specializes in Plexi Glass and Lexan... The make window replacements, Shelves, Showcases Etc. Not sure how big they are, but the name of the place is TAP Plastics. I bought my Plexi out of the scrap box for a $1 a pound..... Spent about $12 and had quite a bit left over.
I used brass cabinet ells with sheet metal screws to hold mine together. To me it looks kinda hoaky, but I get many compliments on it. If I were to do it again I would cement a small piece of plexi in each area that I would want a screw and screw into that..... Speaking of screwing into it be sure to pre drill, and practice on a scrap piece to find out wich size drill bit works without splitting the plastic with the screws you are working with.
The last thing I made was the lid. You will want to make sure that your sides meet at the top as evenly as possible, be sure you're going to clear the diagonal brace by 1/2" and the front frame rail needs to be watched so you can just slip the lid under it, or right up to it. Once that's all done, lay a piece of plexi on top and outline it.
I spent most of a day making mine.... Not that it's going to take everyone that long, but I'm just sayin'.... wink

Thanks for the info crimpton.
Now I have a crazy idea. Before I tell what it is and make a fool of myself I'd like to see if its possible. Could some one please post pics of a 99+ air boc from all sides?
Thanks in advance.

Well here is how I would explain it to your father, because the 97-98's had cooling issues they moved the overflow bottle to the wheel well this added a little airflow to keep things cool do'nt think of this as a modification think of it as an upgrade,FYI the 99 airbox was why GM upgraded the hp #'s from 195 to 200 ,now look for an slp airbox it appears stock but will give added airflow.Chico(pops)
