Hello, there. I am a recent GTP purchaser, as I found a immaculate one owner 2000 GTP for sale and promptly bought it. (I'm loving it, BTW)

I'm in the Atlanta-ish area and have been a car enthusiast pretty much my entire life. I have had several Camaros and Corvettes that I severely modded in my youth. (Now I don't mod cars, I mod my computer as it's cheaper :p )

That being said, I have read with interest the K&N intake swaps and have a question about it. From a purely a performance aspect, why would it not be possible to instead of removing the intake box, or cutting your hose for it fit along side, you used your original intake hose, put the K&N at the end of that, then take the facing off of the air box and let the filter set inside the intake box? Am I missing something? (I have no owners manual, and haven't gotten a Chilton's yet.)

I joined up here because you all seem to have a pretty good community going on here, and seem to be passionate about your cars. Thanks for 'listening' wink

welocme aboard!

sweet looking GTP thumbsup ...that redfire metallic is a gorgeous color (UMfan has a clone)

There are plenty of takes on the air intake setup...try a couple of searches and see what you come up with...I tried a couple homemade and finally settled on the K&N FIPK.
Dont swear of modding just yet laugh ...there are some very simple and inexpensive mods that you can do to your car that will made a big difference for mileage and reliability as well as performance.

I've had my GP for almost 5 years now and love it just as much as when I bought it (maybe more so)...hope it goes that way for you.

notice on the stock tube all those accordion folds? turbulence. good question about the gutted airbox. TBat was running a gutted airbox for awhile, so I'll let him address that. FWI (Fender Wall Intake(s)) are best bet due to the really low air temperatures that far away from the engine.

Otherwise, welcome aboard. Such a sweet lookin ride. From here, the only thing I notice is the lack of window tint and the egg yolk corners.

Welcome,

Open cone intake even helps with the MPG.

Ohh and if you hang out here long enough the mod bug will bite you. We are very very bad influences.

yeah i love my wizair intake, but i ran a opencone intake for a while. the wizair box is very nice!! but the open cone made the S/c whine like a little B*&^$ smile

if you dont plan on modding like crazy just do an ebay intake or a homedepot intake

but if u even think theres going to be a chance youll do a pulley swap or anythig major do a quality CAI or FWI

Ooo looks like I found my missing twin!

Mine is a 2002 GTP though, but still nice to see another Redfire sedan.

I'm still just running an open cone intake. I need to remove my TB spacer to make the CAI work. I've just been too lazy to do it.

Like the others said you want a smooth intake tube instead of the stock one. In my opinion a gutted airbox will restrict the air going into the filter which means it makes the high flow filter a little less high flowing. Also, i don't know if you can fit a 9" cone in the stock airbox....maybe only a 7" filter...

The only reason to gut the airbox is to keep the factory look, and I don't think anyone here is trying to keep the factory look. wink

I've done that before. But I moved on to aftermarket intakes. But what you are suggesting you can do. But it looks a little silly.
Welcome!
