I love you guys...that was my point exactly...way too much for a piece of plastic so I went out today and made my own!
Here is what I posted:
First let me state that this is in no way meant to detur or ridicule anyone for buying or about to buy the GM roof rails. For me there is a cut off limit for silly things and the price they are going for makes me laugh and cry at the same time.
This post is not a spur of the moment thing either. I have been contemplating about what I am going to say for over a year...
I have always been amazed and upset at
1) the amount of intrest in the roof rails
and
2) the amount people will pay for them
So I went to Pep Boys today and searched for something that would maybe replace the GM roof rails without looking shitty.
Well I found it.
1" wide door molding, comes in many shapes and colors including chrome (pretty sure I haven't seen any chrome roof rails yet) and can be painted.
All I had to do was put a 45 degree cut with a razor blade at either end so the windshield and rear window molding fit over the mock roof rails nicely, comes with 3M double sided adhesive built on to the molding. Took me all of 15 minutes to install.
I am still in the testing phase of this so no pics yet, want to see how they hold up durring a hot day, rainy day car wash, etc.
So far I am extremely pleased with the outcome and you can't beat the price (Oh, and the molding comes in lengths of 16', enough for 2 cars so really its only 10 bucks per car if you have a buddy)
I made this post just to explain that there are alternatives out there folks, just be creative!
