2001 Grand Prix with 90,000 miles.

Just noticed a major power loss in our GP. RPM won't go over 4,000 and the car won't go past 60 mph. It will ping if you give it heavy throttle. The car seemed to drive ok the night before. The only problems it has had in the past year has been a SES light for the EGR valve. I have also noticed it lagging on occasion when shifting into OD. The RPM will go go up but it does seem to shift until I let off the gas.

I am thinking it is maybe a clogged cat. I was thinking about trying to get it fixed at the dealer under Special Policy Adjustment - Catalytic Converter #05551 - (09/14/2005).

My other idea was maybe a bad fuel pump. Is that common in these cars?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

If you can get it done for free via the Special Clause, then do so.
If not, then go to ma and pop shop.

Iirc the Feds said all cats less then 10 years of age or under 100k miles the manufacturer has to cover under warrentee. Regardless of the vehicles warentee.

mine plugged at around 60k miles and I swapped it out for a hi-flow unit...an ideal time to install one of those Magnaflow DP/hi flow cat/u-bend delete units. A direct bolt in replacement for about the same price as the cat itself.

What Tbat said, I replaced mine with a Magnaflow bolt-in downpipe purchased through Performance Peddler\'s Ebay store , and couldn't be happier. Runs better, and passed emissions testing with no problems.

Peddler's prices have jumped way up.
ZZP sells same thing for the same or a few bucks less now.
Ped was selling those little less than year ago for $125ish.

Thanks for all the replies. I rolled the dice and took it to the dealer. The cat was indeed the problem. The cat is covered under a seperate warranty as HercMan says. Now unfortunely I have to wait a day or two for a gasket to come in to get the car back. Oh well, could have been worse.

You shoulda offered to run down to autozone and grab a gasket.

I think they're holding your car so they can get more money out of the warrentee.

GM eats the warrentee cost not the dealership.

Autozone usually never has the exhaust gaskets I need either.
