What do you all think about Dex-cool. I have a 2000 Grand Prix with 85,000 miles on it. I just removed the radiator cap and found a brown sludge on the cap & as far down inside the radiator as my finger will reach. I am trying to decide that after I flush the radiator wether or not to reuse the Dex-cool.

Dex-cool sucks, completely flush your system and run the Green 50-50 stuff, best thing you can do for your car wink

I flush my coolant on a regular maintenance schedlue to avoid the sludge build up. If you properly maintain dex cool you will be fine.

So just a regular flush from a shop will get rid of all the dexcool and make it ready for regular coolant?

You guys are gonna be astonished.

The GTP still has the original Dex. 11 years and 115,000 miles lol.

My 98 Silvy blew a lim gasket at about 90k and I swapped the coolant to green.

If you replace you should really be sure you've erased all traces of Dex-cool - it doesn't play well with other coolant. I've got Dex in a 2001 w 115K. It is perfectly clear - no sludge. I occassionally check the reservoir and make sure it is filled to the full mark. Every 4 years drain and refill the radiator. Use distilled water to mix 50/50 and make sure no air is in the system. Dex-cool is not as evil as people think. Air in the system or low level will cause problems - possibly worse and more sensitive compared to ethylene glycol and water.

I agree, I do not like dex-cool either, but ours still has the dex in her as I believe it is still mostly the original, but we did have to add a lot to it when it was going somewhere, but we guess that was due to a bad water pump. The level stays up now and doesn't really disappear before fixing the pump.

Ours has all the sludge and stuff in it as it isn't clear or anything, but I just don't see the need in flushing it now with a 186k or whatever it has on it now unless we have too.

The bottom hose goes bad, radiator or whatever might could happen, I would flush it then! The sludge and slime it produces is nasty though!

My GTP had the dex-cool in it until I got a leaky LIM. Then I switched it to global.

Ditto. I just replaced UIM, LIM gaskets and plenum on my high mileage '98 GP (out of necessity), and also replaced DexCool with the green stuff...
