I am thinking of installing a 3.4" pulley.I was wondering if anyone could tell me if:first;what the original boost is & what the new pulley would be,and second;what[besides maybe marring the old pulley]would be the reason for not just using my puller? confused By the way its a 97 GTP Also how will it preform with no other mod's?

Hello,

Welcome to the board.

I went to search for a thread to emphasize how important it is to use the proper puller for your swap..... I found many that may interest you....

Do a search for "pulley puller"... You will see the horror stories, and this is a small group.

On top of destroying your old pulley, and possibly popping your snout, you still need a tool to press the new pulley, or hub onto the SC shaft. The proper tool is made to do this also.

The old 3 finger style puller will destroy the pulley, and it'll never get it off.
If you think you want to give it a try and use it, go ahead, but you are going to do some damage.
You will end up buying/using the proper puller and you will no longer have your original pulley because it'll end up being all warped like nothing you've seen.
All that is if you're lucky. If you end up being unlucky (which chances are very high) you may also damage the snout. On the bright side of damaging the snout, that will give you the perfect opportunity to buy the Magnuson snout.

...and as Clint mentioned, if by some miracle you do get the pulley off, how do you plan on getting the new pulley on? You can use a hammer. That has been done by a former member. He ended up having to buy a new S/C. If I remember it waas chromed and real nice looking.

That pretty much somes it up for you.

Good luck, and welcome!

PS - don't try it, just borrow or buy a puller.
If I may suggest sending a PM to Dementeddj, I think he had an extra puller he might make you a deal on.

For the record....... Even with the proper tool, your stock pulley may end up unusable after removal. I've swapped several pullies, and I'd say 1 out of 4 end up bent.... Sometimes, they just don't want to come off.

Stock boost is about 6-8psi. I'd recommend supporting mods before you put that smaller pulley on.

With just the 3.4" pulley, the boost will be higher, however, you may actually experience LESS power due to the high KR that the smaller pulley is producing from the extra heat generated. Better off staying stock.

With the pulley only, the power noticed will only be bottom end power. There will be no gains on the top end. You'll need all of the supporting mods to get the full feel of the pulley. If you're not going to install any of the supprting mods, you might want to stay with the stock pulley. It'll be a lot safer for you that way.

Hi Guys,

I'm new to this forum and new to the GTP in general. I just purchased a 98 GTP lightly modded last week from a friend. It has an Intake, 3.4" pulley and some exhaust work. What other mods should I install just to be safe? BTW, I only use 93 octane fuel. My wife is already getting on my case for being on the computer so long trying to gather all the info I can in a short period of time!
Thanks for your help guys.

Luis

You'll want a PCM and a 3" D/P, U-bend delete to go along with the 3.4" pulley

Which PCM do you recommend?
Thanks.

I'll let you know in a couple of days.

I prefer DHP over Intense due to less KR with the DHP.
I've got an Overkill PCM coming in withing the next couple of days. I've been told the the Overkill PCM is better than the best of Intense combined with the best of DHP, so I'll let you know what I find out.

Plugs and wires would be beneficial. Water injection will get rid of KR. You could also use Nitrous, to cool the air. There are tons of things.

I prefer the DHP over the Intense. I see a lot less KR with the DHP than I do with the Intense.
I do prefer the transmission setting of the Intense, the DHP has more agressive settings for the transmssion, and I think at slow speeds the DHP is too quick to shift through the gears, almost like it's in a hurry to get into the final drive. Leaves me wishing the DHP would just hold onto the gear a little longer before it shifts. This is in normal neighborhood driving, not WOT. WOT driving I have to give to DHP, again because of less KR.
