Greetings Grand Prix fans, I have a 98 Grand Prix, it has 120k miles. I replaced the crank shaft position sensor about a year ago. My wife was driving it this morning and it died for no reason and would not re-start. It restarted when I arrived after about an hour. It died about 1 minute later on the way home. It restarted about 10 minutes later. Both times it was basically idleing. When the CPS went bad the rpm gage would drop to zero, and it would stall occasionally. This occured for about 2 years before the car actually started dying. This time there was no warning at all. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what it might be?
Thanx...

Welcome aboard! cheers GT, or GTP? Just a guess, but it sounds like an ignition module type of problem. Also, when was it tuned up last?

Thanks for the quick respnose. Thanks for welcoming me too smile It's a 3.8L GT. I see people referring to a PCM is that also known as Engine Control Module? Intermitent problems are so frustrating. Any advice will be GREAT!! BTW, I'm not sure when it was last tuned up???

Not sure yet, the "check engine light" isn't on, so I assuming there aren't any, it just happened about two hours ago.

Welcome! How about ICV? You say it's during idle so that's what I would think.

Intermittent no starts can be tough; you have to get it to act up, and then see if it's getting no spark, or no fuel. Might be a good idea to pull off the fuel filter, and make sure it's not restricted.

Thanks for the welcome... Do you mean the Idle Control Valve? If so let me add to what I've already said. I let it idle for about 10 minutes on my drive way with no problems. It doesn't surge or cough at all at idle. I drove it to Oriellys (about 2 miles from my house) and didn't have any problems. It doesn't show any codes. I was thinking something in the ignition system....

From your first post, the symptoms sounded like an ignition module problem. Also, I've seen the coils lose spark due to corrosion build up where the bolts attach the coils to the module, at the ground side of the coil.

That's the way I'm leaning too. So, what does eveyone think, I replace all three modules for $60 and roll the dice. Or do I take it to a shop and see if they can check the out put of them and confirm that they are or are not the problem?
