I just bought a 2002 Grand Prix GT with 58,000mi and have the option to add a 4 year 40,000mi major warranty for $50 a month. Are there issues with these cars to warrent getting the warranty? If so what are some of the main issues?

How long are you going to be paying that $50 for? Most of the issues are fixins that can be done by the owner. Each car is a little different. Depending on your mechanical skills also. What is the over all cost of that warranty, that will better help to understand what you're and if you should or not.

Is this a factory extended warranty or 3rd party? If it's third party, keep your money, they'll try to find any way to screw you out of coverage anyway.

Common problems you'd be interested in:
-Tranny PCS/TCC issues
-Lower intake manifold leaks

I wouldn't worry about it then if you aren't afraid to work on your cars. Don't hold me to it though if your tranny goes out! smile

I would suggest against getting it.
You'll be able to fix any issues that come up.

The weakest link of these cars is the transmission.
The 3800 is about as solid as they come. Some people are begining to see upwards of 200k miles.

I concur with previous post...even if your tranny did go south you could probably get it right for $2200. I purchased my 2001 GT with 50k on the clock, it now has 106k and the car has been flawless. I've done tie rod ends, brakes, tune ups and plenty of exhaust (those were my choosing, not because they failed) If you can turn the wrenches I think you'll be fine. I passed on the extended warranty on mine.

aside from that, Welcome Aboard and I hope you grow to love your GP as much as we love ours. This board is a fantastic resource loaded with great and knowledgable members, so post early and often thumbsup

Don't do it. Odds are they'll find any way they can to screw you out of fixing something. If they have to fix it, they'll take the route that is least costly to them, and no one needs to have half-ass parts and labor on their car.

I wish I hadn't gotten mine, it's been useless.

Don't do the warrentee. For the same reasons everyone else said.

Keep in mind the financers are looking to add that cost into the loan. So not are you already paying that 50 extra month but the finance company is making even more money off of you for the interest.

Most of the stuff that goes bad is under $200 for a DIY job. Plus most of it is normal wear/maintenance issues. The only thing that would be worth it would be the tranny some people have had no probs others have had multiple problems. But keep in mind the minute you put one mod on that drivetrain you can kiss any warrentee coverage goodbye.
