I had a coupon for a free oil change.
I normally change my own oil but it was free.
Anyway the service tech at this Chevy dealership
says that my Pontiac needs a Right Front Hub
Bearing at a cost to repair price of $474.12.
The car seems to run fine. How do I know if this
part is bad??? Is the right front the drivers side? Its a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix Gt with
66k miles. Any thoughts on this matter??

Thanks

Tell him to go screw. I had a similar run in at NTB on Sunday who wanted $240 plus labor for the job. If it isn't making a loud noise then you aren't in any desperate need for one. It's probably not perfect, but not in need of replacement, especially at 66k.

Plus, you can get a wheel bearing for about $85-150 at your local parts store. The install can be done by you as well which isn't that hard either. Or just buy the part and bring it to a mechanic that lets you bring your own parts.

We've got places over here that offer deals like that; it's how they make their money! You don't get anything for free....

Yeah, from what I remember you'll need a regular set of wrenches/ratchets along with a 34 or 35mm socket with a breaker bar to get the main axle nut off. I'm sure there's a write up somewhere.

Thanks guys, I will not be going back to that
dealership. I will keep an eye on this and if
it gets worse I will have a buddy of mine
help me fix it.

Thanks again...
