99 gt. original exhaust. kid is home from school this week. checking out car. muffs seem louder. many folks here talk about putting on new, louder exhaust. maybe no res. high flow cat. don't see much talk about putting on a new stock exhaust. the muffs seem short, kindy chubby. are replacement muffs the same size or usually thinner/smaller?

I went to the junk yard and pulled a nice rust free catback and replaced my entire catback for about $50. That included all the brackets. Having a pick up truck made it easy. Didn't have to cut a single thing. It bolted right in and fit like a glove. No welding no nothing.

As for "stock" replacements I'd imagine they'd be roughly the same size unless you went with a universal type muffler.

Don't eliminate the resonator. It'll sound cool at first but after a month or so the drone gets annoying.

My Monte Carlo, with a 3800, has no res and a couple magnaflow mufflers. Sounds decent, not real loud but it has bit more of a rumble to it. I like it well enough, not a whole lot of drone. My only complaint is the quietness, but on my grand prix with a 3100, I run straight pipes.

Unless your doing a performance upgrade or looking for a specific sound, then would stick with stock exhaust. I have stock exhuast with no CAT and it sounds great.

Depending on the Manufacturer, some AM exhaust mufflers can be smaller and shorter but may have the tendency to require minor custom mounting applications

we put all new systems on our 2 previous GTP's. the gt sounds louder out the rear. maybe its only the muffs. pipes look ok. went online and found walker SS oem muffs for $70 each. rear y-pipe is 120? wonder how big the box is they ship it in? talked to car-x shop. they threw out 1000 for cat back system. haha.

The louder these cars get, the worse they sound.

I agree with Corey. I had an exh leak on the camaro (L36). darn thing sounded like a sick tractor. so much so that a few of the guys from the hangar was threatening to repaint my car green when I wasn't looking. Don't eliminate the res or run an open exh. it sounds like...something I can't type on this forum.

muff shop said it could be as simple as broken weld that is hard to see unless its on a lift. easy to inspect up in the air. i wonder what inside of stock resonator looks like? is it straight thru with a mesh core?

the resonator is so skinny that i think it is a straight thru design, like a cherry bomb or header muff. thought i might find someone here who actually has looked inside.
