So my car has a BAD engine noise. It sounds internal. Maybe a rod? It only makes noise between 800 and 1400 rpms. Above that you wouldn't know anything is wrong with the car. Mechanic says the noise is too internal to repair cheaply and I may want to buy another motor.

Any thoughts? suggestions?

How many miles are on it? If you're getting up into the upper 100k range or so, then yeah it might be time to look into finding a newer powerplant. My suggestion (althought only my opinion, since I plan on doing this when something blows in either the trans or motor in mine) would be to look for a complete engine/trans with low miles, say around 80 to 100k or less perhaps..

Until I could eliminate the possibility of something being wrong with the rotating assembly and pistons, I'd let that ol girl sit. Sounds like what my 85 Firebird was doing. That ended up being a spun bearing and scored crank.

120k miles. It started as a tick which sounded like maybe a lifter. I took it in to the mechanic and it was intermittent so of course it wasn't doing it when it was in there. Then during my final exam week for school it started doing it again. I drove it minimally. Today I took it in but now it went from a tick to a knock. It only does it between 800 and 1400 rpms. Above that it sounds and performs fine. I stopped driving it.

I'm just pissed cause I wish it would've made the noise when I first took it in. I can't help but feel like I shot myself in the foot cause I might have caught it while it would've been a cheaper repair.

Ill tell ya...I had an old Chevy Cavalier with the ol' 2.2 4 banger..& it had a knock like that, but I just drove it normally & never had a problem with it. Think it was a rod bearing that was making the noise, but it drove fine, never burnt any oil, etc. If I were you, I'd just drive it & deal with the noise frankly. Not gonna be a cheap repair any way you look at it, plus its going to cost you in inconvenience if nothing else. Keep it serviced like you're supposed to, & if the noise begins to be a regular tap/knock at all RPMs, then plan on doing something like what I described above. If you feel about your GTP the way I do about mine, you'd miss driving her!!

Get ya an oscilloscope & keep it on hand for when you do hear the noise. Try & pinpoint for sure the certain area you hear it..I know its difficult with all the other engine noise, but thats what youre going to have to do unless you get lucky one day taking it to the mechanic.

If the noise goes away at higher RPMs, it's probably a cracked flexplate.

An oscilloscope is used to analyze electronic signals. You're probably thinking of stethoscope.

so i have saved money to fix my car. It has been parked 2 months. I'm being told by one friend I should sell it, one I shouldn't. I love my car, but I'm wondering if I should sell it.

If I sell it, how much would you recommend selling if for with knock?

2002 GTP, 119k miles, Black on black, heated seat, bose stereo, aluminum alloy rims, sunroof, heads up display.

CAI, 3" DP w/ubend delete, 3.4" ZZP allen bolt pulley, crack in bumper, little rust.

I love my car enough that I'd spend the money to fix it. If you're tired of the car, get rid of it. The decision is yours. I'd check NADA and KBB to see the fair value and adjust the asking price to that. Be aware that you're not likely to ever get your money back out of that car.

Alright thanks. I am wondering if I fix it, it has been sitting two months. Anything I should be concerned about given the time it has been sitting?

Also, the battery is dead. I put it up on craigslist for 2000 just to see my options. If I have someone look at it, they will wanna hear the noise I'm assuming. I'm just afraid to start it but I'd have to jump it and let it run which I'm reluctant to do....

two months? no. My Camaro spent a FEW months sitting while I was in Kandahar and Bagram. In Kandy Land, all I had to worry about was flat spots on the tires and an oil change. The flat spots rounded back out after a few trips to work and back on the interstate in the summer heat. This last year in Bagram showed that I needed an oil change. The Grand Prix has never sat longer than a day or two, so I can't really tell you what is specific to them.

I'd try to figure out the problem. The motor is worthless to a buyer right now unless you can prove otherwise or just replace the engine.
Used engine $500. Ask your mech how much to install if you don't want to.
