Has anybody put thinner head gaskets on their gt?? I know some people have done this to make a little more compression. I am wondering where they get em and the thickness.

Frekey,

You'd only be talking about a difference of a few thou of an inch which would make negligeable compression increases. You would get a bigger increase in compression just from carbon deposits in the compression chamber.
Besides, thinner head gaskets provide much less sealing capability.

Now, if you had an old small block V-8 you could machine the heads and then deck the block a few thou to increase compression a point or two.

You'd then probably need a new cam to maximize the new potential and you'd probably have to run 94 octane or higher.

All-in-all, it's probably not worth all the work and expense.

Thats true. But I am planning on a P&P on the heads and some rockers and valves/springs. Although the gain is small, I figured it was a good time to add a little more compression for the same price...since I have to change gaskets anyway! I found out that its 0.062" for the stock thickness. You can be anywhere from 0.045-0.074 which are all within range of what a lifter can accomodate for and dont require pushrod length change.

You can mill your heads up to .030 this would add .5 to your comp ratio ,also going from a stock .062 head gasket to a Cometic .045 this would give you a .017 dfference and for every .06 difference you would net a .1 compression gain so .28 gain from the gasket and .5 from the mill would give you a comp ratio of 10.28-1 ,Chico(pops)

Cool thanks! What octane would I be looking at for the raised compression?

Rough estimate here but on stock timing...

I'd guess above 93 octane, so that means race gas and big $$$

Now if you retarded timing across the board, completely negating the power from the extra compression, you could probably get away with 93 octane.

Kinda like driving a GTP with regular in it. Not a good idea but you can do it.
