Does any body know how wide the Chrome 17's are on the 04 Comp G's?

I am looking at getting new tires, and want to go a bit wider and thinner. cheers

i'm betting the normal size is P225/55HR17, if thats true then i wouldn't go any wider then 50's. thats not to mentin they are a pain in the a$$ to put on, trust me i used to work in a tire shop. things to remember: you WILL have a harder ride if they are thiner and if you drive on bumpy roads then you can say goodbye to your nice round rims. they will be far more likily to bend and the thiner they are the easier it gets. i know in MI i will not get thin tires cause the rims will get bent to he11 in just one trip.

The stock rims are 17 x 6.5, so you MIGHT possibly get away with a 235, but that's definitely the way outer limit of width.

235 is not a width of a tire it is the height and 235/55R17 is going to be slightly wider and slightly taller, which isn't what you wanted in the side wall. if you go with a 235/50R17, you will get a little wider, but about the same height and you wanted a thinner sidewall. that means you'll have to got with 225/50R17. that is the samllest side wall you are going to get unless you go down to something like 215/50R17, but tires of those sizes are sometimes harder to find and get expensive easily too. if you want to go anything wider than that you have to get new rims.

ps: the H that was in the tire size i gave before will change for tire to tire based on the speed rating they have, so unless you are goting to be going 200+ don't worry about it too much. the two sizes i gave you don't have the speed rating in them cause it doesn't matter that much.

ilikemygtp, you are incorrect. The first number, in this case 235, is the width in milimeters if the tire. The second number is the % of the width that is the height from the outside of the rim to the outisde of the tire. So in the case of say 225/55, the width is 225 and the sidewall height is 55% of 225mm.

To answer your question, I would wouldn't go wider than 225 on a 6.5" rim. I have 235s on my 18x8s and I really do not think it would be a good fit on a 6.5 rim. I am going to go 245s on th enext set on mine.

ADDED:
Tirerack.com has an explantion here:

You got 18's? I am on the fence about moving 2 sizes up. I got base wheels (16") and I am going to get some rims, but I am concerned it will be a quantum leap...

The ride, you didn't mention low profiles or not.. I am assuming with 18's you got 235/45 18 or maybe 235/40.. is it rough? I want to get better handling, but I don't want to sacrifice my quiet ride.. so I was thinking 17's with 225/55 (yeah, still touring but still) with some high performance tires..

If I go 18's, I thought it would be too much of a jump.. What do you think?
