sounds like an indicator problem laugh ...seriously tho, I had an old full sized Bronco some years ago...really tuff truck but little crap like that constantly screwing up, plus a thirsty appetite made me get rid of it.

Go to the front of the vehicle. Look at the grill the problem is already circled.

But seriously only thing you can do is open the dash up and see what happened to the indicator. Personally I wouldn't sweat it.

Well, at least with it circled you know the issue, most cars are a guess, lol...

Being a Ford guy myself, I've delt with this issue before. The reason mine came out of adjustment is that the clip that holds the thumbwheel was broken. I just zip-tied it back and it's been fine for a while now. Below is how you adjust the Shift Indicator.

Cable Adjustment — Shift Indicator

1) Remove the upper instrument panel steering column cover.

2) Place the gearshift lever in the (D) position.

To verify you are in D -- (Rotate the gearshift lever clockwise until it bottoms out (first gear), then rotate two detents counterclockwise ((D) position).

3) Hang an eight pound weight on the gearshift lever.

4) Center the pointer in the middle of the (D) position.

- Rotate the thumbwheel located on the bottom of the steering column to adjust the pointer.

5) Remove the eight pound weight.

6) Carefully move the gearshift lever from detent to detent and compare with transmission settings. Readjust if necessary.

7) Install the upper instrument panel steering column cover.

Hope this helps ya out.

Jay

Good to hear you got it fixed. Gotta love the older F-series.

This guy own orange last model Chevy Cavalier. He has work company Ford white van so he bring it at his apt which I live across by his door. He is really piss off that crappy Ford van have flat tire that from huge bolt got into deep on this tire. eek He kick it and got really mad because crappy jack won't go up. I looked at him from my window and laugh about that but I feel bad for him so I help him. He did everything right but I guess this junk jack is broken. I bring my craftsman hydraulic floor jack and do rest job. Yep Ford suck laugh
