I wanted to buy a decent sized older lego model for my kid, I went on ebay, and now they are "RARE" or COLLECTORS items.

I notice as soon as the model is not produced any more (say like 2008 its discontinued) BAM collector item, and RARE.

people are trying to sell these sets for triple the price of a new lego set on the shelf in stores.

even the "used" sets are not cheap.

thanks to greedy people, its no longer a child's toy, it is a "collectors item"

let the kids play people!!!

my rant for the evening........

I honestly am one of those people. My brothers, friends and I used to play LEGO's all the time when we were younger, we had almost every LEGO Star Wars set and when we were finally done playing with them and realized how much they were worth we decided to sell them on eBay. Honestly I start all my auctions (except for a few more rare items) at 99 cents and let the bidders put the price up so its not really the sellers fault sometimes.

So far we've sold about $400 worth of sets and probably have another $400 waiting to be sold but I haven't had anything on eBay for about 2 years. We also have all our loose pieces, about 60 lbs worth, sorted by colors in boxes waiting to be sold.

jaybur, PM me with what sets you might be interested in and I'll see what I can do for ya. wink

I had that Megablocks aircraft carrier a few years back.

Took me 3 days to build it, then my brother sat on it and cracked it like the Titanic frown

I guess, as long as ebay is making them be so valuable, why not, right??

I mean I could totally see some old set from like 1983 still in the original box, never opened, etc being worth big bucks, I get that. What I do not get is sets from last year are already "rare" ???

I know the word "rare" gets thrown around on ebay more than poop in a monkey's cage, but come on!

I am waiting to see the word RARE show up on a 98 grand prix SE. (maybe palsut's "rare SE conversion, lol)

I am looking for an older set of the technic style
Why an "older" set? well that is what I am used to, and I think they made them pretty good in the older sets. I have never actually tried a newer set, but I fear its like the games on the shelf these days, they are put together so poorly. its more about "looks" than functionality. (probably mostly about saving $$ by cutting corners actually).

so if anyone has any complete technic sets laying around, let me know!

I am trying to find a car, truck or something along those lines I can build with my kid. Looking for a set with LOTS of pieces so it takes us a while to complete it.

98greengt, I did not PM you yet, since it didn't sound like you have the technic style sets., if you do let me know.

We got our Daughter the Elmo Live doll for like $45. I think it retails for $60 but they are selling for hundreds of dollars on eBay.

My wife showed me one auction (granted it was for charity but still)...it was the Elmo doll for $150k. Yeah you read that right.

I still have all of my legos. I blame them on turning me into an engineer and car person.

Agreed on both aspects. I never really thought about it, but it probably did have some bearing on it.

Off Topic: Zuul, are you an electrical engineer? You seem pretty good at that stuff.

I never thought about that either but maybe it's true. I had a TON of legos as a kid and I am an engineer as well.

I also like my Erector sets as a kid. I'm an engineer as well, but I'm still going to school for that piece of paper.
