He also wouldnt mind a car that needs a little bit of work as well! so let me hear it guys

Sounds like your car is the perfect solution for the both of you. You want another vehicle and he wants to fix up a car and your car has the speed and he can have extra if he gives you half of $3500. So bingo!

Get a early 90's Ford Thunderbird Super Coupe. It's supercharged, cant remember the engine size but it's close to the GP, and RWD, they are fun little cars and you could probably pick one up for 3-4k. I raced my friend who has one and he beat me but barely (I've got a decently modded GP GT, so stock for stock GTP vs Supercoupe would be a really good race I think.)

Super Coupes have the 3.8 engine. Ford also made the Turbo Coupe, 4 banger with a turbo and later models (87-88) pushing 14lbs of boost.

Tell him to get like a 96-99 nissan maxima, pretty reliable and its fast, it has the 3.0 liter v6, its pretty quick for 190 horsepower, and great gas mileage.

Get an old Mustang 5.0. They're a dime a dozen and any junk yard will have every part you'll ever need.
