TACHOMETER QUESTION

While leaving the car in park, should'nt the tachometer be able to red line when reving the engine? Mine won't go past 4,000 R.P.M.'s in park.

Is this normal? As you can tell, I'm a new GP/GT owner.

The engine controller probably hits fuel cut off at 4000 rpm when you are in park, that's why your engine won't rev higher than that.

I'm guessing it's a safety feature so you don't blow your transmission.

I would not recommend doing this if you want to keep your car in good working order for a while.

Why would you want to do this anyway?

Ya only civics and Neons rev while in park cause it is cool. Just focus on leaving them behind you. Plus, I always thought that someone reving a car that we all know is automatic is really, well, ricerish. Sorry. Enjoy your new ride.

I Reved the engine because I noticed recently that a high pitched sound was coming from the engine when I was traveling at speeds between 50 and 70 MPH. It feels like the overdrive is not kicking in. Should the car be reving at 3 grand + at those speeds?

Your absolutely right about being "ricerish" but I guess I took a wrong approach to a problem I think I'm having with the transmission.

If I remember right, mine only turns about 2100rpms @ 70mph, in OD. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

2100 sounds right @ 70 the only speeds in od that you should hit 3k @ is like 85 and higher. definatley have that checked out.

Could the high RPM's be caused by a clogged transmission filter and oil?

I am having that changed tomorrow.

If you're having your tranny serviced, tell the mechanic of the problem, If you're having it done by a true mechanic, he/she can check it out, if not, it may be something you'll want to have looked at. I'm no mechanic, and I can think of a couple things it may be...I.E. linkage, or computer probs. My ability to troubleshoot the new cars is very limited, so that's what I would have to do....Mebbe someone else has a less expensive way of diagnosing.

NEVER EVER REV YOUR ENGINE IN PARK!!
You will certainly spin a bearing/throw a rod through the block. Engines are designed to work under a load, not to sit and spin. Keep revving and you'll find out. That's why there's a 4G limiter!!

I found out the problem was a 4th gear lock up in the torque converter. A semi expensive problem but now she is running smooth as exlax.
